From the Back Cover

About the Author Mari Le Glatin Keis was born and raised in Brittany, France. After graduating in printmaking from "l'Ecole des Beaux Arts" in Paris, she went to South America to draw plants and flowers. She has been sketching ever since. For the past 20 years, she has dedicated herself to book illustrations, and has been leading sketching workshops in Europe, Mexico and the Pacific Northwest, sharing her passion for recording "life as it is". The Art of Travel with a Sketchbook In this book, Mari gives six simple but effective tips to help launch you into the wonderful world of sketching. Along with some of her workshop participants, she shares an intimate way to record travel experiences, one that requires you to slow down and capture the moment. The approach presented in this book is not about doing "good" drawing or painting. It is about letting the hand record what the eye sees with whatever tool is available, without rules or recipes. All you need is your hand, your eyes, your heart and the desire to travel differently.

To start at the end, "Make each day in life more meaningful by capturing Priceless Memories" is the beginning of an adventure everyone should take. Marie Le Glatin Keis' book, "The Art of Travel With a Sketchbook" is just plain captivating.

She provides simple instructions and major motivation to capture memories using art and words. There are six sections with easy-to-follow tips on how to make memories not only when traveling but even in daily life. The examples of her student's words, art and growth are proof that it works for beginners and even experienced artists.

I am already a daily sketcher and I was motivated to do, try more and enjoy more.

Art and words: so simple yet so powerful!

If you are an artist or someone who has a need to draw this is a great book to get you started or keep you going. Mari's approach is simple, fresh and inspiring. She not only makes you slow down and smell but draw the roses as well. A beautiful book full of wonderful tips and messages from Mari and her participants.

This book covers watercolor workshops in Mexico and France. The author's own work is there, but what is so inspiring are the pages from the students' journals. Some pages are beautiful, some look as if they were done by third-graders. All show a spirit of adventure and wonder and the gentle encouragement of the teacher, the author of this book.

Mari Le Glatin Kels lists six steps to get started with a travel sketchbook: 1) pack light and simple (she shows sample tools and paints) 2) relax (this is evident in the pictures done by her students; no one is embarassed to show his or her work) 3) play with color (sample the dirt; try it in your book) 4) stay small (traveling is not when you can make big works of art. Use your travel journal, and even use a single page for multiple smaller works) 5) collage (add ephemera from the trip, decorate your boarding pass and paste it in, save that ticket stub) and 6) sketch with words (use pictures to illustrate, add words to confirm).

I wish I could go on a workshop trip with this lovely woman, but unfortunately she passed away. Fortunately, she left us this marvelous book.

This was a great disapointment. The book is basically illustrations from her students journal's with no instruction from her. It is just a self guided look
at others journals. It was an expensive book that was of no value to me.

This is a very inspirational book that is well written! I have already accomplished personal sketches just by following the step-by-step instructions that Maria suggests. The best part is it is really written by her students!

I purchased this book because of a posted recommendation in an article I read. Interesting but not a how to book, if that's what you are looking for.
