Editor Deoclecio Redig de Campos was, when this book was published in 1974, the Director General of the Vatican Museums, and he supervised the distinguished panel which produced this wonderful book. Mr. de Campos had then been a member of the Vatican Museums staff for 41 years. It is difficult to imagine a better person to guide us through the Vatican's art treasures. Each chapter starts with a scholarly introduction by the member of the Vatican Museums' staff who is most familiar with the topic, as when Nello Vian, the Vatican Library's Director, gives us four concise pages on his specialty. This book is itself a treasure, and you will see more in these beautifully illustrated pages than you could in a week of guided tours of the Vatican Museums. Regretably, because it makes a perfect First Communion gift, the book is out of print. I am quickly eliminating the stock of used copies by giving them to my little friends. I can only hope that it will whet their appetites and encourage them to visit and experience the awe of these treasures for themselves.
