Biography

Natural Self returns to Tru Thoughts with his heavy funk meets twisted hip hop production and new found vocal talents.

Natural Self is the ongoing project of Nathaniel Pearn, aka producer Keno-1. Pearn was originally inspired by the rhythmic force of The Bomb Squad’s productions for Public Enemy, and hip hop was the primary influence on his first forays into music. This review is from: Art of Vibration (Audio CD)
I discovered this album while trying to acquire everything involving Andreya Triana. It's interesting that such a staggeringly funky album has been sitting here, available to the general public, for two years without a single review. Natural Self deserves more than this - The Art of Vibration is clearly an innovative collection of funk. Upon first listen it may seem like a disjointed patchwork of sounds, but give it a few tries and it'll make more sense each time.

There are a few tracks that I simply cannot get into, one of them being Rising (which ironically features Andreya Triana, which was the reason I picked up this album in the first place). But I think 10 amazing tracks out of 13 is a pretty good score, especially since really good instrumental/semi-vocal funk music is not as easy to find as one might imagine.

Sadly, I just haven't been able to really get into Natural Self's 2009 release, My Heart Beats Like a Drum. Perhaps I just need to give it more time, but it doesn't seem to be powered by the same high-octane groove that propels The Art of Vibration.

Definitely recommended for fans of 70s funk as well as modern masters like The Budos Band and Chris Joss.
