This review is from: Art of Vibration (Audio CD)
I discovered this album while trying to acquire everything involving Andreya Triana. It's interesting that such a staggeringly funky album has been sitting here, available to the general public, for two years without a single review. Natural Self deserves more than this - The Art of Vibration is clearly an innovative collection of funk. Upon first listen it may seem like a disjointed patchwork of sounds, but give it a few tries and it'll make more sense each time.
There are a few tracks that I simply cannot get into, one of them being Rising (which ironically features Andreya Triana, which was the reason I picked up this album in the first place). But I think 10 amazing tracks out of 13 is a pretty good score, especially since really good instrumental/semi-vocal funk music is not as easy to find as one might imagine. Sadly, I just haven't been able to really get into Natural Self's 2009 release, My Heart Beats Like a Drum. Perhaps I just need to give it more time, but it doesn't seem to be powered by the same high-octane groove that propels The Art of Vibration. Definitely recommended for fans of 70s funk as well as modern masters like The Budos Band and Chris Joss. |
