Book Description

Great world conflicts have produced not only great military heroes but also great artists who have documented the heroism and the bloody battles. Spanning wars that have involved U.S. troops, this gallery of outstanding works of art ranges from majestic land, sea, and airscapes portraying all the branches of the armed services to closeups of hand-to-hand combat. The paintings are more expressive than photographs because they compress many experiences into a single view. Charts and maps clarify particular scenes, and first-hand testimonies of the men and women who participated in the battles add an extra dimension. The many oversize reproductions highlight some of the most moving paintings and illustrations ever created in the field of combat art, most made available to the public for the first time. A Selection of the Military Book Club.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A U.S. Marine and an artist, the author has painted combat scenes of the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars, and here surveys the history of American war art. Chenoweth's criterion for reproducing a work is that the artist must have witnessed the depicted scene, a standard that excludes imagined images. These paintings and watercolors, hundreds of which appear in color, are, therefore, gritty, realistic, and disturbing. For example, Tom Lea's oft-reproduced World War II canvases include The Price, a ghastly crimson of a marine shredded by artillery. American battle art, Chenoweth explains, which traces back to pictures of naval battles of the War of 1812, contains an imperative toward realism; nevertheless, the genre has not been immune to developments of the past 200 years. He includes as examples paintings by Edouard Manet and John Singer Sargent, while illustrating how abstraction has gained a foothold in many artists' styles, as in Kerr Eby's stark drawings of 1943's Battle of Tarawa. Hardly a glorification of war, Chenoweth's viscerally riveting album will be a popular addition to the military shelf. Gilbert Taylor

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Art of War: Eyewitness U.S. Combat Art from the Revolution Through the 20th Century (Hardcover)
Retired Marine Corps Col. Chenoweth (a combat artist in Korea and Vietnam) has created a phenomenal large-format collection of 200 years of American combat art. More than a so-called coffee table book, Col. Chenoweth tells the fascinating backgrounds and field experiences of the combat artists and the battles they both participated in and interpreted with their talent. After a century of relying on battlefield photographic realism, it is amazing to see how "less accurate" drawings and paintings provide an emotional realism almost never captured in photographs. It's also refreshing to see so much coverage devoted to post-WWII conflicts and the extremely high quality art representing Korea, Vietnam, 1980s Lebanon, the Gulf War and Somalia. Military history students and buffs will want to refer to this book for a unique perspective on the conflicts they study. This work is particularly heavy with the work or Navy and Marine Corps artists. Well reproduced art, well written and HIGHLY recommended! Bravo Zulu and Semper Fi, Col. Chenoweth.

This review is from: Art of War: Eyewitness U.S. Combat Art from the Revolution Through the 20th Century (Hardcover)
THIS IS AN AWESOME COLLECTION OF IMAGES OF THE WARS OF THE PAST TWO HUNDRED YEARS. PAINTINGS, PENCIL SKETCHES, WATERCOLORS OF BATTLES, SOLDIERS,TANKS, AIRCRAFT,SHIPS,ETC. GREAT PORTRAITS OF WHAT THE ARTISTS SAW BRING THEIR EXPERIENCES TO LIFE. I SPENT HOURS LOOKING THROUGH THIS BOOK AND I JUST GOT IT. MANY THOUGHT-PROVOKING IMAGES OF WORLD WAR I, WWII, VIETNAM, THE CIVIL WAR, EVEN BOSNIA, SOMALIA, AND THE GULF WAR. THERE IS AN ESPECIALLY GRUESOME PAINTING FROM WWII CALLED "THE PRICE" THAT REALLY BRINGS HOME THE HORROR OF WAR. AN AWESOME COFFEE-TABLE BOOK. IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTO ART AND/OR WAR THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU. SOME VERY COOL STUFF IN HERE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
