5.0 out of 5 stars Body = Art
While some people may argue that this is just a 'vanity' book, the pictures within will convince all that the body is an amazing piece of art. David Life and Sharon Gannon, owners of the immensely popular Jivamukti Studio (http://www.jivamuktiyoga.com/) in New York, contort their bodies in ways that are truly mind-boggling. 1.0 out of 5 stars Art of Yoga? Should be The Art of Vanity
The photos are indeed beautiful,(kudos to Martin Brading) but overall the book left a bad taste in my mouth upon realizing that this book is more a testament to the authors than to the testament of the art of yoga. The beauty that comes from the art of yoga is its transformative magic - not just physical transformation, but spiritual transformation. It's difficult to see...

The photos are shot in black and white - alternating between playful and intense moods. If you are a fan of Life or Gannon, this book is a tribute to their mastery of yoga.

For those of us who just enjoy yoga, this is art - pure and simple. For those who are not familiar, the pictures may be intimdidating or a curiosity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tribute/Art -Must have for yogi's, August 9, 2005
This review is from: The Art of Yoga (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book of inspiration, fantastic photography & art. But mainly is a tribute to David & Sharon Gannon's life's work. What a beautiful & original way to document a life dedicated to yoga! Any yogi would miss out by not having this fabulous book in their library. Truly a work of art.

I am in awe at the beauty and grace presented in this book. If I am feeling down, or sad, I open the book, observe the grace and beauty and read the text that is opposite the photograph- and in an instant my mind clears and once again I feel grounded

2.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor, January 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Yoga (Hardcover)
This is a coffee table book filled with photos of the authors in various poses with some of their musings as text. These two darlings of the New York Downtown crowd are Cooler Than Thou, and this book reeks of vanity, a quality I thought great yogis exorcised from their Selves. If you want a book to help you learn yoga, try Light On Yoga, Yoga the Iyengar Way, Donna Farhi's book, Schiffman's (Moving Into Stillness), etc. If you're a Gannon/Life fan and you like looking at them, this is your bible.

The pictures in this book are just breathtaking! The body is truly as a work of art when seen through the eyes of a dedicated yoga practice. My friends and I are newly inspired! I highly recommend this book to yogis and non-yogis alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Part of Art, September 19, 2002

In recent years, yoga has taken many shapes and forms. Many people have begun to practice yoga, and seen what it can do for their mind, soul, and body. Those who have never practiced yoga before, are always intrigued at the ease that yogis twist, turn, and curl their bodies into pretzel-like form. This book shows asanas in gorgeous black-and-white photos, demostrated by Sharon Gannon and David Life, but my favorite part is the text! They have inserted the most insightful text, from both their own minds, and ancient Sanskrit. I'm buying all of my friends who want to get into yoga a copy for Christmas! Maybe seeing these two twist and turn will inspire them to begin their practice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga Is Art, and this shows The Art of Yoga, March 25, 2003

This book is awesome! They are two of the most wonderful and influential yoga teachers in the West, and they're showing that yoga can be fun. The text is so touching and I use it for a "quote guide", pulling some of the beautiful sayings out for everyday notes and letters. I've bought a copy for everyone I know who practices yoga, including myself. It's a refreshing change from the many textbooks available. I recommend it to anyone wishing to perk up their coffee table.
