5.0 out of 5 stars I've tried a bunch... this one is GREAT November 11, 2006
OK... so I've been told the Symphony is the Cadillac of breast pumps... but with a price tag of $[...] who can afford that?? Renting it cost $[...] a month if you can find a place to rent it.. I did and used it for a month.. I honestly was not totally impressed for the price. Then I read up on the swing this pump ALSO (like the symphony) includes the Medela 2-Phase Expression Technology - the new standard for unsurpassed naturalness, comfort and efficiency. AND after buying it.. I liked it BETTER then the symphony. Infact I think it works just about the exact same, which is crazy of Medela when the price is SO different. I have tried the Medela Pump in style as well as the Avant Isis and this one is the best.

I would highly reccommend this pump.
POSITIVES:
This pump is portable. Comes with a travel bag, runs on batteries OR you can plug it in. The pump itself is about the size of a Hardees Hamburger. The breast shield is soft and very effective, you can control the speed and it has the letdown mode as well that automatically turns on after a few minutes. The breast shield is soft and comfortable, the suction and speed is the same as the symphony, the pump is SIMPLE to use, FOUR buttons-you can't NOT figure it out easily! It is FAST and emptys your breast totally.

NEGATIVES: (I have to stretch on this one cause I love the pump) It's not quiet, I don't know why the other review says it is.. It's actually louder then I thought it should be.. but not louder then the Medela Pump in style or symphony. But just not "quiet" I don't want you thinking you are going to get something you can pump with at the front of a mini van and noone in the back is going to hear..
It's a Single Pump... I know.. DUH..

After my wife gave birth to my daughter at the hospital, she wanted to breast feed and I supported her decision to do so. After a c-section however, they recommended using a breast pump to get the milk to the baby via the bottle. The unit they had at the hospital was a Medela Symphony, and she loved it. The problem is that it costs over $1,200.00 and we could not afford anything near that at the time for home use. After we read many reviews, we decided to give the Medela Swing Breast Pump a try, and overall we are very impressed with it for a single breast unit. The milk output is very similar to the $1200.00 hospital unit, which is great.

Now for the cons that I have read for this product, and a way we found to fix them... The tubing that comes with it causes two undesirable effects. The first issue is that breast milk can back its way into the tubing if you are not careful and can get into the motor, which is bad news all around for many reasons, including contamination (think of weeks old milk trapped in there, yuck). Secondly, it is a bit loud. Not so loud that it wakes everyone up in the house, but loud enough to make watching TV or having a conversation distracting, not to mention making the baby wonder what the heck is going on.

** HERE IS HOW WE FIXED these two problems: Purchase a longer length of Medela breast pump tubing. The ones for the Symphony fit the Swing Pump perfectly. We tried the longer tubing that was used with the hospital Symphony model that they gave to us when we left (which is around 42 inches long instead of the included 28 inches long tubing) and the difference was astounding. I would have NEVER thought that a slightly longer tubing would quiet the unit by 80% AND help prevent back-flow, but it did... as weird as it sounds.
