4.0 out of 5 stars TV on the PC!, June 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Artec T14A USB Digital TV Receiver (Black) (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a digital tuner (after June 12th that's all we get "over-the-air"). What I failed to realize is that I still needed the old NTSC analog standard if I needed to connect this gear to a cable TV system. Make sure you get the stick that has both analog AND digital. Also the PAL standard if you travel with it.

I connected it to my cable and scanned for channels and it didn't come up with any. Connected to my digital box from the cable company only got me 3 very high channels.

The device, a short cable to keep the heat from transferring to my laptop computer, the strange antenna and the antenna adapter (and of course the software) all came together in a nicely arranged box.

I plan to use it to watch TV on my balcony but I haven't had the chance I tried the set-up inside and I was able to pick up 12 digital channels. Outside will be even better I think.

I didn't want to be "wired" to my cable box anyway. I am going to see about getting an updated version of the software and drivers because for some reason the mouse doesn't line up with the graphics so you kind of have to guess and where the mouse pointer really is.

This beast does get warm! Little kids should be advised not to touch it after an hour or so. You might be advised not to as well. It has vents to let out the heat. If you are handy, use a wire coat hanger to make a little stand for your coffee cup and make use of that heat! I'll use it in winter as a hand warmer (with a mitten on of course).

2.0 out of 5 stars Dead after one year warranty expires., April 2, 2009
This review is from: Artec T14A USB Digital TV Receiver (Black) (Personal Computers)
I bought this usb atsc TV tuner in 2007 with my friend. It was very hot when running. Although my friend and I rarely used them, after just one year the warranty expires, my friend's card could not be detected by windows anymore. After one month, my card died also.

Artec said: "The temperature will increase by use T14A product because tuner and chip during the work. Also we have been made some reliability test so it is normal."

I don't know how they did the reliability test. But since two of them were dead after just one year, I don't think it is coincident. I suspect that they have serious design problems.

I suggest you to consider other more reliable choices, like hauppauge ones.
