This novel has all the things Jane Lindskold does best: a dynamite female protagonist, believable animal companions, excellent world-building, and smart characters who make smart decisions. (Are you sick of dumb characters that make you embarrass yourself by yelling at books in public spaces? Try a Lindskold novel and feel the relief!)

Adara the Huntress is a rare Huntress of Artemis: a woman whose genetic gifts ("adaptations") give her claws, night vision, and a psychic link with an equally gifted puma, Sandshadow. The puma wears earrings, and doesn't need help to put them on. You'll have to read the story to find out how that works.

Griffin is a scholar - basically an archaeologist - from a once-mighty star-faring human empire. He came to the abandoned (not so much, really) rustic resort planet Artemis looking for remnants of the technology that was lost in a great war. What he gets instead is trouble, but lucky for him Adara and Sandshadow come to his rescue. The story starts out as "help Griffin to get back home," but plans never survive first contact with the enemy. There are Bad Things happening on Artemis, hidden from its general populace, and these heroes aren't about to ignore someone in need.

One of my favorite scenes in this story involves Adara tearing into a giant robotic Walking Eye (not called that in the novel, but you should know what I mean) with her claws. If that doesn't entice you, I don't know what will.

Also: I love the hardcover version of this book. The cover jacket is gorgeous and has a nice texture.

Jane Lindskold begins a new series with sympathetic leads and an interesting premise. She hooks you immediately and takes you into this new world with unforeseen revelations and plot twists. I read it in one sitting and will now have to wait patiently for the next installment. Hope it will be soon. Another great read from this highly dependable writer.

This book was a lot of fun. The plot was interesting and maintains a logical progression, which I really like. There are some really compelling characters that I just wanted to spend more time with (Terrell!), learn more about their histories and backgrounds, what makes them tick - that kind of thing. The world itself is vast and mysterious, making it so that any number of adventures could take place. I'm especially curious about more of the ancient technologies that could be unearthed...

I feel like this series has a lot of potential, and the first book just starts to scratch the surface. I want more!

Artemis Awakening is an interesting start to a new series by Jane Lindskold. I love the premise. The Empire created Artemis as a pleasure planet. The location was know to only a few and when the Empire went to war the location was lost. Now after over 500 years one man, Griffin Dane, has re-discovered the location.

Worldbuilding: Lindskold got that right from the beginning. From the very first pages I knew that the humans and some animals were changed and that Artemis was a created world made for the pleasure of a select few. As the story progressed more facts about Artemis were woven into the story making the world more and more complex.

Characters: The story started out very character driven. I had a very good sense of Griffin and Adara. They started out as the main characters but the focus changed as the story progressed. It became more action driven and the focus expanded to include Terrell and the Old One Who Is Young as additional main characters. There are numerous side characters who are part of the action. Some like Bruin are fleshed out but others are not. My favorite character is Sand Shadow, Adara's enhanced puma. She is such a cat.

Plot: Griffin is stranded and wants a way to go home. He thinks the Old One Who Is Young might have he information he needs to call for help. When they discover the Old One is not what he seems a rescue mission becomes the focus of the book. This is where it becomes more action driven than character driven. Look for the planet to have some surprises for both the reader and the characters. One problem is solved but another is left for the next book in the series.

Writing: This is my first time to read a book by Lindskold and her writing impressed me. Everything flows without any interruptions.

Artemis Awakening (2014) is the first SF novel in a new series. It is set on Artemis, a planet created by the Imperials. Its location was lost five centuries ago during an interstellar civil war.

In this novel, Griffin Dane is an outsider from the planet Sierra in the Kyley System.. He comes from a large and wealthy family. He is a historian, an anthropologist and an archaeologist. He discovered the long lost coordinates of Artemis and took a small starship to the planet.

Adara the Huntress is an adapted native of Artemis. She lives in Shepherd's Call. She is out in the wilds practicing her skills.

Benjamin Hunter is a teacher of adapted children and a mentor of Adara. Bruin lives in Shepherd's Call.

Terrell is a factotum. He knows many things suitable to guiding an Imperial around the planet.

Sand Shadow is an adapted puma. She and Adara can communicate mind to mind, but only with images and sensations.

In this story, Griffin took his shuttle down to the planet, but lost control of the craft. It fell like a falling star from the sky and crashed. Griffin lost consciousness in the impact.

When he wakes, Griffin is hanging upside down in the shuttle. He releases himself from the harness and twists to land on his feet. The shuttle shifts a little when he hits the ceiling.

Neither exit hatch nor the airlock will open. He uses the manual override to open the airlock. The shuttle shifts again as he moves around.

When the airlock opens, Griffin faces a large feline with large teeth. He freezes while deciding what to do. Adara mindspeaks to Sand Shadow that she has frightened the man.

Sand Shadow moves back and Adara throws a rope to Griffin.
