Artemis Fowl
By: Torrey M

Artemis Fowl, a 13 year old genius, thought that there was a magical civilization of fairies or sprites underground, so he goes in search of a fairy or sprite to retrieve their book of magic. When he finally finds a sprite who is drunkenly willing to give up her book for more alcohol, the fairy technical genius, Foaly the centaur, finds out that Artemis got the sprites' book of magic. He tells the fairy police chief, Commander Julius Root and soon after almost every fairy in the underground of Europe will find out that Artemis Fowl has exposed their civilization to the human race. Mayhem breaks out and Artemis's life drastically changes.
Accompanying Artemis through the book is Butler, and Butler's sister Juliet who are trained bodyguards who work for the Fowls. This book is told by Artemis's point of view and by a fairy police captain called Holly Short. This is a grabbing story, full of humor, secrets, crime, guilt, and suspense. Once you pick it up you will want to read the whole 5 books of the Artemis Fowl series. I recommend this book and the rest of the series to anyone that would like to read an amazing series of books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series!!, July 10, 2010
This review is from: Artemis Fowl Complete 5-Book Boxed Set: Artemis Fowl, The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, and The Lost Colony (Hardcover)
These books are wonderfully entertaining because of the characters and the plot. They are based on several adventures focusing on Artmeis Fowl and Holly Short.

Artemis is an Irish genius, whose focus is maintaining the family's status as an overwhelmingly rich and powerful force. He does this by plotting schemes that are very rarely legal and often not very nice. However, this actions are understandable as they are explained. As the books procede and Artemis gets older, he develops a streak that causes him inner conflict about this.

Holly Short is the first female captain in the fairy people's police force which puts her under lots of strain to be perfect, but who has a maverick streak that can get her into trouble. She inadvertantly gets caught in Artemis's scheme in the first book and continues to be drawn into subsequent ones until she begins to choose to work with him.

Other characters that are relevant through all of the books are Butler, Juliet, Mulch Diggums, Foaly, Julius Root and Artemis's family.

Butler is Artemis's body guard and definently the coolest character in any book I have read. He is about 7 feet tall, knows multiple martial arts, can kill a man with his pinky finger, can cook gourmet meals and has a soft spot that makes him thorougly likeable. Juliet is his younger sister who has many of the same characterisitics with the attitude of a teenage girl.

Mulch Diggums (kleptomaniac dwarf) gave up his magic to enter a life of crime, but this does not alwyas work well for him. He brings humor to the story with his slightly off point of view, but his dwarven abilities are a vital part for the team.

Foaly is a technical gunius that is the ops man for the fairy police force who has a smart mouth but can do amazing things with technology that he has developed.

Julius Root is Holly's commander. He has quite a temper and little patience.

Artemis's family is the center for Artemis and why he develops most of his schemes. As he gets older he struggles to deal with the ideals that they want him to adopt now with the core beleifs that his father taught him when he was young.

All of the characters continue to develop and change throughtout the books. Most of them demonstrate very authentic doubts about themselves and the others but have insight into their own strengths. They are all likeable in their own way and contribute individually to each book.

The plots of all of the books flow smoothly and at a good pace. They have twists and turns that kept me on my toes, but are not too complex that I have to spend alot of time figuring them out (which is good because I read for fun). The problems that are encountered are interesting and the differnt solutions that are developed are genius, but they don't always work.

They books are a good balance of serious and funny and balances the use of magic with technology with good old fashioned brain power and fighting. Each book can be read on its own but does work better if read in order. (Colfer also puts in suble references to practices that are environmentally unsound that are not preachy but did make me wonder what I need to do about my carbon footprint.)

The one complaint that I have about the books is that the limits and abilities of the technology change as needed in each book, what is no problem in one is not possible in another.

Overall, I throughly enjoy these books and would recommend them to all types of readers. The characters are wonderful and the plots are entertaining.
