3.0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about glucosamine + chondroitin
Put it this way, I have joint pain, and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. But I have my doubts about them, too, especially with regard to the claim that they "rebuild cartilage" (note: I am not a doctor, and I am just a layperson and reader of average knowledge, who has done some reading on this).

This review is from: The Arthritis Cure, Revised and Updated: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse, And May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (Mass Market Paperback)
Unless you're illiterate, I can't think of a single reason for anyone with painful arthritis to not read this book. It's cheap, can be delivered right to your door, and gives the reader a wealth of info about arthritis. Here's some of what it can do for you:

-helps you undertand what is going on in arthritic joints

-covers what supplements have been shown to help fight arthritis. And just running out to the store and buying a bottle of "glucosamine" isn't good enough- the book will help you choose specific brands that the author has meticulously evaluated. Dosages are also covered.

-provides you with a specific 9-step program

-discusses painkillers

-goes through the role of exercise in arthritis and how to choose the best type for you

As you can see, the book covers a lot of information and is very complete- in fact there's even a section on beating the blues that can affect a lot of people with arthritis. So if you have painful arthritis and are looking for a resource to point you in the right direction, I suggest checking out this book. It's cheap, helpful, and based on a lot of sound science. Other research-based books on arthritis I liked include Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure-Revised Edition, January 23, 2004

This review is from: The Arthritis Cure, Revised and Updated: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse, And May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (Mass Market Paperback)
Dr. Theo has done it again! Newsweek Magazine was right, "Arthritis treatment will never be the same." And it certainly hasn't been since the 1997 original.

The good doctor was the first to enlighten us to Glucosamine, Chondroitin and SAMe, all evidence-based treatments that work. After much ridicule by 'old school' doctors, and manufacturers of traditional pain killers, Dr. Theo's suggestions are now accepted by most doctors and Arthritis foundations worldwide.

Much is new since 1997 and Dr. Theo includes all of the latest breakthroughs including an entirely new, disease-improving treatment called AVOSOY. It's the first fully vegetarian arthritis product. There is info on this product at
drtheo . com.

Also new is a comprehensive chapter on arthritis prevention, something needed badly since 1 in 3 adults will develop arthritis symptoms, and over 90% will have it on x-ray by age 55. This disease starts 10-20 years before you feel symptoms, so prevention is important.

The books is over 50% new or updated. New supplements, drugs, diet chapter, exercises and a detailed explanation of how those prescription and pain relievers can accelerate cartilage loss, something we should avoid.

Read this book. Thank you Dr. Theo!

I suffer from joint pain in the the hands, and knee and have been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis.

Dr. Jason Theodosakis book is well written and a good read. He gives massive evidence why you should go on a Glucosamine, Chondroitin, ASU supplement regiment to relieve Osteoarthritis. He also shows the different pain relievers many which only mask the symptoms and give bad side effects taken long term. He also shows eating a proper diet like the Mediterranean diet will help relieve pain and you will lose weight to take pressure off joints.

Later he gives a list of other joint diseases and what drugs and supplements may or may not help.

Dr. Theo stresses to be very careful about buying Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and ASU supplements as the MAJORITY of different companies products independently lab tested failed miserably as to the actual amount and purity of the Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Asu advertised. Many, many companies trying to cut corners to lower their cost.

I was on Glucosamine and Chondroitin years ago ( ASU was not on the market) and may have not been on long enough to feel improvement or may have used an inferior brand. Little pain relief.

I have been on the Mediterranean diet mentioned by Dr Theo one month and do feel better. Ive lost 23 lbs. I restarted a Glucosamine and Chondroitin regiment after making sure the product was independently lab test certified.

Also Dr. Theo has a website and sells independently lab certified arthritis supplements and vitamin D3. From his website I ordered a 6 month supply of ASU and 6 months supply of Vitamin D3 as sometimes I don't get out in the sun much and don't drink much milk. I'm also ordering some Boron at a heath store as Dr. Theo suggested. Also am on Omega3 and Flax oil. Dr. Theo strongly states to go to your doctor first and get evaluated before going on a supplement regiment and diet.

Also Dr Theo shows that part of his plan involves different exercises to build up strength and muscle to help the joints. He lists many different exercises many with low impact on the joints that many can do even with severe joint pain and partial deformity. He also list things to watch about in regards to Depression people sometimes get when having severe joint pain and can't do the things they used to be able to do. Dr Theo also writes about stretching exercises to add flexibility but never try to stretch cold muscles.

I've started taking more walks with my dogs and parking the car farther from work for longer walk time. May get a inside stationary bike for to use while watching TV. May try a very limited free weight use at the gym after I don't ache so much.

All I can say is I feel about 40% better in 1 month using what I learned from Dr Theo's book. Plus I'm off pain killers. As an added benefit my blood pressure is down and because of higher fiber intake my stools are more easily passed ( less animal food that has no fiber). One of the studies Dr. Theo quotes had patients on Glucosamine and Chondroitin for 3 years so I'm willing to take the supplements that long for results. Hey, I can only tell you how I feel. I'm glad I bought and read Dr Theo's book. Give it a try and ask your doctor about it before going on a supplement, diet, and exercise regiment. Thanks Dr. Theo ....5 stars.

P.S. Nov 21 Sunday. Was able to ride my horse today for a long trail ride. Had not be able to ride for almost a year due to hands and knee pain due to Osteoarthritis. Could not get on and off the horse and putting on the horse's tack was painful. Now by changing into a total non processed food Mediterranean diet and taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements able to enjoy horseback riding again. I'm getting better.
Nov23 Received my order of ASU and vitamin D3 from Dr. Theo's website. Quick and no problems. Now on Glucosamine, Chrondrotin, ASU and vitamin D3 and the Mediterranean diet. Was able to walk dogs 1 block and then 3 times around the block fast walking. Tried push up this morning...not able to do...no arm strength. Tried sit ups.. not so good... back bones partially locked up...jerking. Will try to improve using methods in the Arthritis cure.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about glucosamine + chondroitin, April 28, 2006

Here is what the Mayo Clinic site states about glucosamine and chondroitin (Mayo has one of the top-5 arthritis departments in the country):

"Many manufacturers market dietary supplements that they claim can rebuild cartilage. But little scientific evidence supports this claim. The most studied of these supplements is glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine is a natural compound in your body that helps make your cartilage strong and rigid. Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of joint cartilage and can affect any joint, including the elbow, ankle, wrist and knee. Although there is insufficient evidence that glucosamine rebuilds cartilage, there is some evidence that a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may relieve moderate to severe pain in some people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The mechanism by which it does this isn't clear."

Some doctors state that glucosamine mimics aspirin and Tylenol, i.e. it is a pain reliever, not a rebuilder of joints.

The book is still good in that it shows the current scientific ideas on how to heal and feel better; but let's not let our hopes of a "holistic cure" get in the way of evidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars hope for the hopeless, August 13, 2008

This review is from: The Arthritis Cure, Revised and Updated: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse, And May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (Mass Market Paperback)
This well written and authorative book has given me hope in my battle with arthritis. I'm following the recomendations and using the products mentioned in the book and am seeing positive results. Although my hips are probably to far gone to benefit from the program (per discussion in the book), I'm hopeful that I'll be able to protect the rest of my body from arthritis.

The section on the effects of prescription drugs alone makes this book worth reading. How many of you are aware that it is believed that Celebrex, an effective pain reliever, contributes to joint deterioration?
And, did you know that 16,000 people in this country alone die yearly from using NSAIDS?

The author reviews many commonly used drugs for arthritis relief and tells what works and what may be dangerous to you.

This review is from: The Arthritis Cure, Revised and Updated: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse, And May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (Mass Market Paperback)
Three months ago I was as skeptical as John (below). I have OA in both knees and was contemplating knee replacement surgery. I decided to give this guy's recommendations a chance as a last resort, since my meds weren't helping much. I've been on fairly large doses of glucosamine/chondroitin, ASU, SAMe, and Omega 3-6-9 since around last Thanksgiving. My knee pain has reduced by, I would guess, about 75%. I don't want to over-hype this regimen, and I don't have any idea how long the relief will last. But it's real, and it's substantial. Note that you have to allow a couple of months for it to fully kick in. [...]

The above review was originally written on 2/14/07. As of 6/7/07, I've added the supplement MSM, and the "cocktail" continues to work. I'm still off pain meds except for the occasional ibuprofen. The supplements aren't magic, my knees continue to hurt, but I'm still much closer to pain-free than before I began the regimen. And most importantly, I'm still avoiding the surgeon's knife. ~CPW

EDIT AS OF 9/15/11: (REVIEW CHANGED FROM FIVE STARS TO FOUR) I underwent double knee replacement surgery on 4/25/11. The book's recommendations probably postponed the surgery by a few years, but once both knees were bone-on-bone, there was really no alternative. And now, 4+ months after the surgery, I'm nearly pain-free.

One more recommendation: If both knees are bad, and if your surgeon agrees, have them both done at the same time. The rehab is sheer hell for a month to six weeks, but two new knees don't hurt much more than one. Had I not made that decision, I might have tried to limp around on one good knee for the rest of my life (I'm 67), rather than endure another rehab. ~CPW

Although the website that goes with this book is far below par - the information offered in this book is excellent. Especially the supplements - who know that not all supplements have rigorous testing standards and that so very few supplements even have what they say they do. Great book, great advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The First Was GREAT the Second Edition Better Yet, January 18, 2004
By
I purchased multiple copies of the revised edition of the Arthritis Cure not only to give as gifts to friends and family members but because my mother has, for a couple of years, been pain free after following the advice of Dr. Theo's first book. His new book improves and expounds on his recommended program on which anyone should be able to see relief from the pain and inconvenience of this debilitating disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably appropriate for every osteoarthritis sufferer, April 18, 2008
By
This review is from: The Arthritis Cure, Revised and Updated: The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reverse, And May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (Mass Market Paperback)
In the past ten months, I've burned through over $100k in insurance benefits, pursuing what conventional medicine offers for osteoarthritis. In that time, the disease has rapidly and progressively degenerated joints in my neck, shoulders and hips to a point that I am almost completely bed-ridden. Conventional medicine has not only done nothing whatsoever to aleviate the disease or the pain, it has addicted me to morphine and Duragesic (80 times more potent than street-level heroin). I turned to this book out of desparation.

The book states clearly and early on, that conventional medicine doesn't know what to do for osteoarthritis OTHER THAN to mask the pain with narcotics. The position of conventional medicine - i.e. most A.M.A. practitioners - is that osteoarthritis is a normal part of aging and once it occurs, there is nothing that can be done for it. This book contends that is absolutely wrong.

The book puts forward a very compelling argument that by following a nine point systematic approach, the heart of which is a regimen of daily glucosamine and chondroitin together with ASU, osteoarthritis can not only be stopped in its progression, but the symptoms actually reversed. The book is wonderfully and powerfully written and I think maybe, the best hope and option for osteoarthritis sufferers.

How am I doing since going onto the 9-part program espoused by the book? Well, I've only been on the glucosamine and chondroitin for about three weeks. I haven't been able, as yet, to locate a source for ASU, and I haven't yet implemented any of the the other 8 parts of the cure - though I will be doing so within the next few days.

Have my osteoarthritic sypmtom abated since I started the program espoused by this book? Sad to say, no. However, I am truly convinced that as I factor in the other 8 parts of the cure and give it another month, my pain will decrease, I will regain range of motion, and I will regain function again.

I believe this is an excellent book and very much worth a read by every sufferer of osteoarthritis.
