Book Description

January 1998
Nearly 16 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, a disease that causes the breakdown of cartilage in joints, most commonly of the hip and knee. This book highlights the substantial advances in medical science made over the last 20 years in the treatment of hip and knee problems, many of which are not well known to potential patients. ARTHRITIS OF THE HIP & KNEE helps patients understand the value of becoming actively involved in the decision-making process surrounding their treatment by covering: *causes, treatment, options, and disease progression; *advice on living with osteoarthritis; *preoperative therapy; *surgery: cost and benefits, options, procedures, and improved techniques; *postoperative therapy and advice on living with an implant; *the future of joint replacement; and *interviews with hip and knee patients. ARTHRITIS OF THE HIP & KNEE is the collaborative effort of three people, each contributing a unique insight into the treatment of osteoarthritis and the rehabilitation process. Ron Allen-the patient-had one of his hips replaced at the age of 40, and the other at the age of 45. David Stulberg-the orthopedic surgeon-performed Ron's operation. Physiatrist Victoria Brander supervised Ron's rehabilitation following his second surgery.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In the United States, arthritis is the leading cause of disability, resulting in over 350,000 joint replacements annually. Orthopedist S. David Stulberg and rehabilitation physician Victoria Brander (both of Northwestern Memorial Hosp. Rehabilitation Inst. in Chicago), along with patient Allen (a lawyer), have collaborated on this comprehensive patient handbook, which discusses the basics of arthritis, alternative therapies, joint replacement, and the frontiers of research. The book also reflects the change in thinking regarding the level of physical activity advised for arthritis patients. More importantly, it fills a gap in the literature by outlining a step-by-step process from preparing for surgery through recovery. The book is well organized and clearly written, with numerous black-and-white illustrations. Exercises are easy to follow, and the authors make the requisite caveat to consult a therapist. Following the medical information, Allen presents his own perspecive and experience and addresses aspects of surgery and recovery sometimes minimized by professionals. Recommended as an inexpensive addition to healthcare collections targeting patient education needs surrounding arthritis or joint replacement surgery.?Lisa McCormick, Jewish Hosp. Lib., Cincinnati

2.0 out of 5 stars alternative to hip replacement surgery, October 24, 2005

This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge" prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability. A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com

if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.
there are advances in joint surgery that have occurred since the book was published, but the general information is excellent. my new hip is ceramic on ceramic through an "anterior approach". at the time of publication, the author mentions both as future improvements. however, the pre and post op preparation, the patient experiences, and the overall handling of the subject are worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars I (YOU) am (are) in charge!, April 8, 2000
This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
It is every patient's responsibility to educate themselves about their disease and to take appropriate action. The book tells you how to do just that. I always felt the material to be balanced and thoughtful, with views from the patient, surgeon and rehab specialist. I loved the little gray boxes filled with lists of what to think about--very organized. I especially liked the chapter about selecting a surgeon and suggested questions to ask. When I tried it, my doctor was very forthcoming with information--they like talking to someone who has done their homework. There's so much more, but it would be easier if you'd just buy the book!
