2.0 out of 5 stars alternative to hip replacement surgery

I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge" prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability. A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com

there are advances in joint surgery that have occurred since the book was published, but the general information is excellent. my new hip is ceramic on ceramic through an "anterior approach". at the time of publication, the author mentions both as future improvements. however, the pre and post op preparation, the patient experiences, and the overall handling of the subject are worth the price of admission.

5.0 out of 5 stars I (YOU) am (are) in charge!, April 8, 2000
This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
It is every patient's responsibility to educate themselves about their disease and to take appropriate action. The book tells you how to do just that. I always felt the material to be balanced and thoughtful, with views from the patient, surgeon and rehab specialist. I loved the little gray boxes filled with lists of what to think about--very organized. I especially liked the chapter about selecting a surgeon and suggested questions to ask. When I tried it, my doctor was very forthcoming with information--they like talking to someone who has done their homework. There's so much more, but it would be easier if you'd just buy the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for First-Time THR Patients, August 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
This excellent book rates 10 stars! Written by an orthopedic surgeon, a physical therapist, and their patient, the book gives equal time to each point of view and discusses Ron's actual surgeries, what went well and what went wrong, and how it could be improved next time. I recognized myself and my own problems throughout the book. Gratefully, I felt much more knowledgeable and better able to advocate for myself after I finished reading this book.

I bought this book prior to hip surgery. It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises. I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and generally interesting, August 30, 2002
This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
The experiences and explanations provided are primarily devoted to total hip replacement. Interesting combination of viewpoints - orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist and patient - makes book more helpful to those facing the daunting prospect of a total hip replacement. Helps somewhat to decrease anxiety about the surgery and recovery. Information is generally accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped get me comfortable with having hip-replacement, September 20, 2000

This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
I'm 43 and was pretty surprised and scared when I was told I needed hip replacement surgery- although I was in a lot of pain and having difficulty walking. This book goes through, step by step, making the decision to have surgery and what takes place during and after. I've read several books, but this is easy to read and from the patients perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for the authors and this book!, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Arthritis of the Hip and Knee: The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge (Paperback)
I was given this book by one of its authors (Dr. Stulberg) as part of the pre-op regimen. I was 45 when my hip was replaced by Dr. Stulberg. I was back to work in about 6 weeks and still feel great today, 5 years later, praise God; (I even cycle/commute over 20 miles)...while some ortho docs didn't offer me any hope of regaining my 100% of normal; only a lot of limitations, S. D. Stulberg gave me hope; the Lord gave me healing!

I credit this book with giving me the knowledge I needed to face this surgery with the right attitude. I'm a big coward and this book helped me alot. Need a hip?...go to a surgeon who won't give you a lot of heavy MD lingo and instead listens to and answers your questions.

Ron Allen and his story of athletic partiscipation in such sports as tennis skiing basketball is a chapter out of my own life. His way of telling it like it really is and the many issues that confront the person with arthritic knee or hip problems is so helpful as I like at my future. I have tried the suggestions found in the chapter on living with the arthritic condition. It seems to be helping and I want praise highly this book..I plan on inviting he and his boys to Traverse City to play tennis and watch the Red Wings train for the l999 season
