Book Description

8772884924 978-8772884929 December 1, 1995
Although pesticides have played a beneficial role in the development of 20th-century agriculture - especially in the tropical regions - biologists and farmers have long been aware that in the long term, pest control by means of pesticides causes unacceptable consequences for the general environment. A balanced pest control strategy must be based on the natural control agents - predators, parasites and other useful insects - within the agro-ecosystem. The growth and dispersal rates of these useful insects are an important factor in laying down an ecological pest control stratgy, and this subject is currently being studied at a number of institutions all over Europe. This volume is the first of three conference reports which draw together the results of current research on population dynamics of natural prodators. It is a collection of papers from the EU Workshop on Enhancement, Dispersal and Population Dynamics of Beneficial Insects, held at the University of Aarhus, Denmark in 1993. The proceedings form part of a series of workshops dealing with the biology of arthropod predators and parasitoids, and their role in limiting pest insects in European agriculture.
