Grade 5-8-Caroline Lazo (Lerner Pub.) profiles the remarkable life and stunning achievements of Arthur Ashe, the Jackie Robinson of professional tennis. Growing up in segregated Richmond, Virginia, in the 1940s and 1950s, Ashe was the first African American to gain prominence in tennis. Included among his lengthy list of pioneering tennis accomplishments are his notable race barrier-breaking feats as the first African American to be named to the Davis Cup Team, win the NCAA singles and doubles titles (1965), win the U.S. Open (1968), and Wimbledon (1975), hold the number one ranking in the world (1975), and gain induction in the International Tennis Hall of Fame (1985). But Ashe was equally noted and respected for his considerable humanitarian efforts to combat racism and apartheid, work with children in clinics to cultivate tennis among disadvantaged youth, and for his efforts as a writer and scholar. Lazo chronicles his manifold achievements succinctly and carefully demonstrates the character, grace, intelligence, and code of conduct that Ashe manifested in all areas of his life. Ashe was not without his detractors, however, and the criticism he received for his lack of involvement in civil rights issues during the 1960s is reviewed. When he died in 1993 from AIDS-related pneumonia, the world mourned. Reader Ted Daniel bears an uncanny, yet not unpleasant, audio resemblance to a kinder and gentler Jerry Springer in his steady and clear narration. Daniel's energetic and well-modulated voice holds the interest of listeners. Wisely, he does not attempt vocal distinctions when using Ashe's voice or any other quoted person. An excellent choice for many areas in the curriculum as well as for enjoyment.

A Kid's Review

I thought this book was imformative, well structred and good for my report. It had important facts i needed, and they werent to general. Sometimes , the pictures got a little distracting and they were some what pompous. Overall it helped me with my term papaer, and I am glad i bought from AMAZON!!!!
