3.0 out of 5 stars beautiful book
My son was a little disappointed because the outside is actually a book cover. Not as detailed as he thought. But the pictures and the writings are very pretty and it held his interest for atleast a day which is pretty good for a 7 year old boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome pictures, June 4, 2007
I love this book! I can look through it over and over again and never get tired of the beautiful illustrations. This illustrated book ties into the Spiderwick Chronicles books. It is the actual field guide that they talk about in this series that all of the fantasy creatures are trying to get ahold of. It is not supposed to be in human hands. No telling what the humans would do if they knew their secrets!

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable guide that is both beautiful to look at and full of valuable information, November 17, 2005
By
Do you hear something knocking on the walls of your house at night? Do you keep losing bobby pins, pencils, or spools of thread? Have you woken up to find that all the laces of your shoes are tied together and that your dog has a large bald spot on its head? If you answered "yes" to any or all of these questions, then there can be no doubt that you have a member of the faerie world living in your home. Is it a boggart, a brownie, or a knocker? What do these mysterious creatures look like?

Within the pages of this remarkable guide you will find the answers to these and many other questions. Without a doubt this is one of the most comprehensive and fascinating books of its kind. Co-authors Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi have taken pages from Arthur Spiderwick's famous Guide and used them to create a book that is beautiful to look at and full of valuable and useful information. Where else will you learn how to stay on the right side of a brownie, and how else will you know that the gargoyles you see on buildings may in fact be alive?

Packed with luscious color illustrations and numerous pencil sketches, this book is a must for fans of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Readers of all ages will get lost in the pages (some of which fold out to reveal beautiful illustrations) and in no time will be convinced that they indeed are looking at the life's work of Arthur Spiderwick, which thankfully has been reproduced here by the talented duo of Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Near Perfect, October 12, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While a little too old for the Spiderwick Chronicles themselves I can appreciate an interesting and detailed world for a series of children's novels. And I can always appreciate Mr.DiTerlizzi's art.
This is good stuff and lets you see another world.

4.0 out of 5 stars spiderwick field guide the movie tie-in edition, February 9, 2008
This review is from: Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You: Movie Tie-in Edition (The Spiderwick Chronicles) (Hardcover)
This book was extremley missleading , we have the orignal Aurther Spiderwick's field guide to the fantastical world around you which is FANTASTIC! but this says it is the movie 'tie -in edition' so I thought it would have picture etc relating to the movie , but the cover is different and the book inside is exactly the same as the origin, which is a wonderful book so if you havent already got it ,its great ,but dont be mistaken like me and expect a different book and end up with 2 the same and a dissappointed child

4.0 out of 5 stars The Different Spiderwicks, April 29, 2008
A Kid's Review
I own the Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide. My Dad and I are trying to finish all the books and after we finish them, we will rent the movie and see how the movie is.

This book is really helpful, because it shows you what the actual field guide that Jared has in the books. It's fun to see and hold what Jared can see and hold.

The book has different sections showing the many different Spiderwicks (Faeries). In the table of contents you will see there's different kinds of creatures like elves, pixies and other spiderwicks.

The first character in the Spiderwick Field Guide book is Thimbletack the brownie. Thimbletack is the first spiderwick that Jared and his twin brother Simon and his older sister Mallory meet.

I would recommend this field guide to other people who are reading the Spiderwick Chronicles.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You're Not Going to Take My Word for It, Listen to the Nixie, August 30, 2006

I was not familiar with Holly Black's prose or Tony DiTerlizzi's artwork before purchasing this book. I am familiar with quality, however, and acting on a suggestion from a trusted source (a Nixie, if you must know), I got a copy of the FIELD GUIDE as a gift to some youngsters (who are also of the highest quality).

Leafing through it (okay, poring), I experienced a sense of grief that I was giving the book away. It's that good. In fact, I'm idly contemplating getting a second volume of this FIELD GUIDE for myself, though it may look curious next to Brautigan's TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, December 29, 2005
By
I've been looking forward to the release of this book for some time and am so happy that it lives up to my expecations. It's simply gorgeous and is now one of my most treasured illustrated books. It fits beautifully with the novels and I look forward to more books in this series.

There are several fold-out pages which illustrate some of the fantastical creatures in the book. One of these pages folds upwards (vertically) instead of sideways (horizontally), and so you must be careful to hold the book flat, or the page will rip in the corner.

5.0 out of 5 stars raising the standard., October 14, 2005
I could not be more impressed with the art and the presentation of this book. Just about every trick was used to make this book stand out far, far above the rest of its kind. Unlike Brian Froud, Tony keeps the subject matter lighter hearted and clear of images that are not appropriate for younger readers. This book is very suitable for children and should be adored and used as a reference by illustrators for years to come. As an illustrator, I am tremendously inspired by Tony's artwork and creativity in this book. some of the illustrations are just about as good as it comes.
a fantastic work in its entirety!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You, April 29, 2006
Oh, where to begin? This book is a sure-fire literary classic, reminiscient of Tolkien and Lewis. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Spiderwick made into a movie, and be reprinted in novel form for centuries. The serial really is that good. The artwork is above any I've ever seen, the writing is entertaining and even somewhat educational, and the whole project is just beautiful. Highly recommended. Don't even bother getting this from the library-it's too good to return.
