Editorial Reviews

This super rare recording of producer/arranger/guitarist Verocai's 1972 self-titled album will appeal to fans of the folksy soul and lo-fi electronic experimentations of American artists like Shuggie Otis or the funky orchestration of producer Charles Stepney (Rotary Connection, EWF) as well as the Brazilian artists Tim Maia and Jorge Ben. This unique recording has funk flavorings, a touch of folk, jazz style soloing, 20 piece string arrangements, the blending of electronics and keyboards with organic sounds, and superb soundtrack style music.

First: Musically, this album fits in perfectly between the Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle releases from the early 70's. If you love those guys, you will dig this. Do not buy at these huge prices, though. It isn't so absolutely essential that you should spent 30 bucks. I'll just say, this...there's a certain well known Chicago record store online that sells this release for something like twenty bucks less. A word to the wise.

Second: The sound is a bit muddy. It doesn't sound as if it was remastered, though due to its rarity I guess it's a miracle we have it at all. Who knows how much to blame on the original mix?

Third: Wax Poetics #36 "The Brazil Issue" features a brief article on Verocai.

Such a fantastic record. A friend of mine discovered him and showed me and this record has quickly climbed to being a part of my desert island list. It's so short, but it leaves you wanting more!

If you like Brazilian music ala the almighty Joabim, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, then you'll love this. This album is on par with any of them. Honestly, this CD just blows me away everytime I listen to it, which is often! Honestly, you'll love this album.
