Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Arthur seeks a job taking care of pets to prove he is responsible enough to have a puppy of his own. He is glad that his first job is to mind a dog for a week, even a temperamental one, and he lets Perky sleep in his room. An ant farm and a canary follow--but when sister D. W. finds frogs in the bathtub and a boa in the livingroom, Mother banishes these "pets" to the basement. The reason for some of Perky's fussiness is revealed when, on the day she is to go home, she disappears--and is discovered in Arthur's closet with her new litter of pups. The pleased owner gives one to Arthur in addition to his fee--most of which pesky D. W. claims for a back debt. Arthur, whose appearance continues to evolve from his first aardvark appearance in Arthur's Nose (Joy Street, 1976), is a bit rounder and pinker, and the story a bit thinner, but his many fans will cheer this fourteenth adventure in a popular series. --Ruth M. I am in awe of how Marc Brown has simplified the concept of responsibility, so that it may be
understood by my two year old daughter.

My two year old daughter summed this book up by saying; " Arthur showed his mommy and daddy he can take care of everyone's pets now he can have Pal . In my eyes that says it all !

The author has sucessfully done what was intended . He communicated an important moral concept to a small child , what being responsible is and how doing things morally right can be fun and rewarding.

Keep up the good work Marc Brown you are helping me communicate important moral, social, family, and educational values to my daughter.

What child hasn't asked for a pet at some point in their childhood. What an excellent way to teach responsibility. This book shows the parent how to test a child's readiness for responsibilities, while showing the young readers the perils and pitfalls of having one's own pet business, as well as the rewards, and entertaining us all in the meanwhile. Well done. It's also fun to look in all of Marc Brown's books and find the hidden names!

The book was 3" x 4." Not a standard size, which one would expect. Not very trustworthy to omit, I'd say.

My son has been wanting a copy of this book ever since he read it in school. It was nice to find a gently used copy for cheap that I won't worry about if he bends the pages or tosses it on the floor.

My 4 year old is a huge Arthur fan and he loved learning about how Arthur came to have his dog, Pal.
