Zoë Boekbinder is a gift, plain and simple. Her music (which tends to be just her voice and her acoustic guitar) is catchy and irresistible, caught somewhere between being folky and pop, and emulates the sound of an old vinyl. Working in Vermillion Lies, I always tended to separate Zoë from her sister Kim Boekbinder as the better musician between the two; not to sound mean to Kim, since I do tend to enjoy her music, but Zoë's is more spot-on and concise, the sound of what goes on inside my head. While her songs tend to be about love lost, Zoë sings about such a sour subject with one of the best singing voices I've ever heard; it goes from murmur to authoritative at the snap of a finger, and her pop sensibility outshines anything she ever accomplished in Vermilion Lies. Songs such as a 20 year-old girl being run over by a San Francisco cable car ("Typewriter Girl"), missing out on love and writing down words that go well together ("Inexorably"), and a ghost lamenting that "just because I'm dead doesn't mean that I can't love" ("Funeral") are treated with upbeat music (for the most part) that overshadows the loneliness that Zoë sings about. My only complaint about the album are the last few songs ("Skeletons," "Going Home," and "Mean"), which don't quite stand up to the rest of the songs on the album; they're still better than most other music that's being made these days, though. I've come to learn that if you listen to just one song by Zoë Boekbinder you'll find it impossible to stop there.

This is my favorite Zoe Boekbinder CD (although Darling Specimens comes in close, close second). I love what she's done with her music and how polished this whole CD feels. It's beautiful and gripping and relaxed and immediate and playful and sensual.

When Zoe Boekbinder and her sister Kim performed as the band Vermillion Lies their music was distincly fun and innovative, and their live shows were a joy to attend. Although the duo was already an impressive musical act, the sisters' music has only become more developed and polished as they have pursued their respective solo paths.

Several qualities of Zoe Boekbinder's music make for a superb sound on Artichoke Perfume. The melodies strike that balance between catchy hooks and originality, and in their expression Zoe's vocal tone is both clear and complex. Besides the melodies, the overall composition of the songs is enjoyable. The listener gets the sense of a unique, seasoned style that distinguishes the artist form other songwriters, and throughout the album there is a great variety in the songs that keeps the whole record sounding fresh and exciting with every listen. This sound, I should say, includes a good measure of folk, jazz, burlesque, rock, and more.

But the strength that suprised me the most in Zoe's music is her instrumentation. Whether it is an apt use of hand claps and snare drums or blistering trumpet bursts, each song receives a full production, without being over-produced. Pretty much everything about this album is awesome. (Ultimately I gave it a 4 to leave room to go up to a 5, like Joni Mitchell or something).

Artichoke Perfume is a delightful collection of original, catchy songs, featuring fresh arrangements and (often) quirky lyrics. Zoe Boekbinder's voice is a pleasure to listen to, and I look forward to her future releases.
