Product Description

Romance, Alien Space Staions, White Holes, Interstellar Smugglers - and More - Highlight this Enthralling Short Novel. Sally and Rog are sometime lovers, but to the universe at large they are just "space bums," who ply the galaxy starways dealing in stolen antiquities, looting derelicts, and smuggling illegal goods. Though they remain friends and partners, the truth is that Rog is still in love with Sally, but Sally only loves her starship, Sally's Fantasy. But things begin to change when they hear of a mysterious white hole that ends near a mysterious alien object. At the other end, Sally and Rog find themselves thousands of light years outside the galaxy. The only object in view is a space station of unknown design, millions of years old, that may hold untold treasures - or sudden death. What happens there will change their lives and rekindle the passionate love for each other they had long thought could never be ignited again. If they somehow manage to escape with their lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Premise, Poor Writing, December 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Artifact: A Novel of Alien Contact (Kindle Edition)
The premise of this noveltte is good and could have been developed into a great story but, it wasn't. The characters were shallow and simplistic and, never really developed. The dialogue was clumsy. The characters conversed like 12-year-old children instead of the rugged smugglers and adventurers they were supposed to be. The actions of the characters were also, more like children than adults.

The plot was simple and predictable without the excitement one would expect from an adventure into the unknown. The alien was remimescent of those depected in the old

Twilight Zone episodes and the interaction between the alien and the humans was unrealistic and unbelievable.

The science was very weak and it seemed as though the author didn't really understand the concepts. He felt that it was necessary to explain what an Astronomical Unit was but his "FLT drive" and the "White Hole" were completely skipped over.

This may have been a good read for a 10-year-old if it wasn't for the lame attempt at sexual situations between the characters. It was NOT worth the $3.19 Kindle price.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting story, February 1, 2010

This review is from: The Artifact: A Novel of Alien Contact (Kindle Edition)
This book was defiantly written by a guy who does not really know how a woman thinks. The lead character is a woman who's name is Sally. She is supposed to be this fiercely independent person who is the best space ship pilot in the universe. While you can feel the love she has for her ship, her human relations leave much to be desired. The dialog is kind of predicable and without substance. Her love interest is her ex husband named Rho. There is supposed to be chemistry still between them, but you honestly dont feel it. She acts more like a 12 year old boy than she does a woman. The two men in the story are very weak and also act like little boys who just learned how to cuss who are pretending to be men. Real men do not go to their room and cry many nights on end. The story is interesting, but I wish there was more to it. As soon as it gets interesting the book ends. It feels like the writer lost his will to write and just threw in an ending. Great story idea though just needs more toward the end. The writer also leaves it open for a sequel which I would gladly read. If you are looking for some light weight, read in one day science fiction, then this is the story for you. I just wish that the characters felt more real and that the author spent more time making the story last. The technology was perfect; sometimes I feel to much is put into describing future technology and it takes away from the story, this book does not get you lost in technology.

I also love how the characters would get worried about supplies getting low. My biggest complaint is that the female character was written by someone with no clue as to how a strong female would think and act. I also hate how the main male character acted unlike a strong male character. Rho didn't act like this hard core black market rebel that he was supposed to be. My advice to the author would be to spend some time surrounded by some marine men and women to get a feel for how the characters would really behave and think. People who have been in sticky situations that have made out alive.

I just read how negative this review sounds and I don't mean to be negative. It is a cute story and it also got my imagination going. I also wish that there was more archeology in it as well, (the name makes you think of archeology). Hopefully the author will write some more adventures and possibly develop the characters better. It is an excellent read for the price.

More About the Author

I call myself Papa Joe. I've loved science fiction and fantasy from the time I learned to read. My hobbies, besides writing, are traveling, adventure game playing and do-it-yourself projects. Before I retired, I was a technical writer at a major computer manufacturer. Several short stories of mine have been published in E-zines. Two series of paranormal suspense novels of mine, called The Morgaine Chronicles and Raven Lenore, Psychic Investigator, have been published by Renaissance E Books. These novels may be purchased from Renaissance's Page Turner Editions site, at Fictionwise E-Books, at Amazon.com (Kindle edition) and other online book sellers.

Renaissance has also published collections of my short stories, The Sands of Time, Mordrake's Apprentice, and Love Among the Stars, five SF novels, Dinner With Dracula, For Love of Kumiko, Pawns of Tomorrow, Star Tower and The Bagod and a dark paranormal fantasy called The Laws of Magic. In the humorous fantasy vane, Renaissance had also published White Queen, Black Knight; Search for Prince Knight Black, Once in a Blue Moon and The Curse of Chaos.

I was born and raised in a working class neighborhood in Chicago. I believe my love of reading stems from my parents and grandparents, who were all avid readers. As a child, one of my favorite things was hanging out at the library or browsing in flea markets for books I could afford. One day my parents took me to see a most wondrous movie, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It made me a believer. From that time on, I read every Oz book I could get my hands on. I also loved comic books, especially the ones in the SF genre, Planet Comics, Superman, Captain Marvel, etc. I also liked mathematics and science, especially astronomy.

When I was twelve or so, I discovered the pulp magazines. They had garish covers and were printed on blotting paper, but the insides were marvelous. Even the letter columns were interesting. In these magazines, and the slicks and paperbacks that followed a few years later, I learned to love such writers as Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Robert Silverberg and so many others. About that time I decided I wanted to write in the genre, but never got started until many years later.

I was drafted into the army near the end of the Korean War and was sent to Germany, where I worked as a microwave repairman. Also, I married a girl who went to the same high school as I did, who I met at a party after I graduated. We've been married over fifty years now. We have four wonderful girls, ten grandchildren (who are now adults ) and one spunky
great-granddaughter.

For most of my working life, I was a technical writer for a major computer firm. I learned many things there about computers, about writing and about people and corporations. I lived the Dilbert cartoon. Because of my work, my wife and I moved to a small town in upstate New York where the manufacturing plant was located. We still live there, although the company has since closed the plant.

In 1993, I retired. That's when my fiction writing career really started. First I sold a few short stories to E-zines. (I use "sold" loosely. I seldom received a paycheck.) Then I sold a novel to a POD publisher and another to an E-book publisher. The pay is meager, but I enjoy writing so much that I'd probably do it even if they paid nothing (which is the standard with most E-zines).
