The techniques not only involve building models of the mind (and hence aid hypothesis testing) but also incorporate programs to assist the everyday work of psychiatrists. Knowledge representation, natural language understanding, search and planning, computer-assisted diagnosis, simulation and teaching are discussed. Enough basic theory is outlined to enable readers to understand and to carry out research in the area and to take part in the major ethical debate which will affect the direction of research in the area.

An introductory book on AI,

The title is somewhat misleading. The correct title can be introduction to AI. There is only one case study discussion on PARRY ( simulation model of paranoia developed by Kenneth Mark Colby). The book gives a very good introduction to all aspects of AI for a non-computer scientist. In the context of expert systems it gives details of actual transcations. The book is weak in the context of logic and automated theorem proving context, which is expected. It is quite likely that the author wanted to write a sequal to the book with emphasis on psychiatry. The readers are encouraged to read the book entitled ` Unconscious as infinite sets', for an interesting interplay between logic and psychoanalysis.
