Book Description

January 1993
This is a collection of some of the best of David Shepherd's wildlife art. He is known internationally as an artist and deeply committed conservationist and first learnt about Africa from books about the big game hunters of the 1930s. His first experience of the real Africa was when he attempted unsuccessfully to become a game warden in Kenya. Returning to England he took up painting, initially specializing in aviation art. He was then commissioned by the Royal Air Force to do two paintings in Kenya of elephants, and this was the beginning of his career as a wildlife painter. In the introductory text, David tells of his many visits to Africa and India, the people and animals he met and the friends he made. There are also descriptions of trips he made to take photographs of game.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book is a straightforward plea by talented artist Shepherd to care about wild animals. The favorite paintings collected here convey that message powerfully. Most are of African and Indian animals, but a polar bear and a bison are included, too. In his extensive introduction, Shepherd also explains why people should and must be concerned with wildlife. Although he claims no scientific knowledge, his appeal is intelligent as well as passionate. Shepherd has long returned financial assistance to the animals he paints, creating works for fund raising purposes; several of those artworks are reproduced here. He has also established the David Shepherd Conservation Foundation to raise funds and awareness. This book is a worthwhile part of his efforts. Suggested for art, wildlife, and conservation collections.
