If you are an artistor you have an artist or art lover on your gift lista new collection of quotations speaks directly to you. Artist to Artist: Inspiration and Advice from Artists Past and Present brings together more than 1000 quotations from artists on 57 subjects ranging from creativity to solitude, technique to talent. Whether these ideas were expressed centuries ago or only recently, they have been gathered here as a way of showing the often diverse and even opposing views of art while making connections among kindred spirits, artist speaking to artist.
Clint Brown, editor of Artist to Artist
The editor of this collection has taken care to arrange the quotations to create a sort of ongoing dialogue among the 207 artists represented. At times it can feel like listening in on a conversation among fellow artists. Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend. (John Singer Sargent) When I painted his portrait and offered it to him, he glanced at the canvas, then, looking at himself in the mirror, thought a moment and said: Well, no! Keep it! (Marc Chagall) In order for a portrait to be a work of art, it must not resemble the sitter. (Umberto Boccioni) I would wish my portraits to be of the people, not like them. Not having a look of the sitter, being them. (Lucian Freud) If the artist only reproduces superficial features as photography does, if he copies the lineaments of a face exactly, without reference to character, he deserves no admiration. The resemblance which he ought to obtain is that of the soul. (Auguste Rodin)
Often the opinions expressed are diametrically opposed, revealing the diversity of viewpoints among artists of today as well as of the past. In the books preface, the editor expresses the hope that readers will find a sense of affirmation and renewed commitment as artists, or as a part of a larger community of those who share a passion for art.
Artists and art lovers will find a wealth of delightful, witty, wise, thought-provoking, and inspiring words from Old Masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Titian; Impressionists such as Monet, Degas, Renoir, Matisse, and van Gogh; and modern masters from Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore to Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg.
The book is arranged alphabetically by subject, easily located thanks to headings at the top of each page. An index helps readers find quotes by individual artists.
Enhancing the books visual appeal are 18 black-and-white art works by some of the artists quoted, paired with apt quotations ranging from solemn to irreverent. For example, a lithograph by German artist Kthe Kollwitz called The Survivors accompanies her anguished words: While I drew, and wept along with the terrified children I was drawing, I really felt the burden I am bearing. I felt that I have no right to withdraw from the responsibility of being an advocate. It is my duty to voice the suffering of men, the neverending sufferings heaped mountain-high. And with Toulouse-Lautrecs print of a man dancing in a casino, we are treated to his advice: Of course one should not drink much, but often
Editor Clint Brown is a professor of art at Oregon State University. He has exhibited his art work for more than 25 years. He is the author of Drawing from Life, a figure-drawing text book published by Harcourt Brace.

Artist to Artist,
By A Customer
This review is from: Artist to Artist: Inspiration and Advice from Visual Artists Past & Present (Paperback)
A beautiful selection of short quotations from artists -- lessons learned, inspiration, know-how, observations, ruminations, history -- well-organized by subject, presenting overall an artist's way of comprehending her/his work and this world. This is an enjoyable read and a lovely book for anyone (including this reviewer, who works as a lawyer) who would like some daily inspiration from the deeper levels of human being, seeing, comprehension and creativity. It is not a book that one "finishes". It is to be picked up again and again. Also a fine gift for anyone who is a thoughtful artist, (e.g. also gave one to my 21-year-old nephew in college.)
