This is one of the best cds for an introduction to a variety of songs from the great Kenny Burrell. This collection begins from the very beginning of his career in 1956 and features many of his well-known songs from the 50's and the 60's. But don't count Kenny out! He is still making cds even as we listen! One of the finest jazz guitarists of the last and present century, Kenny Burrell is hot!

Kenny BurrellTHE ARTIST SELECTS--Blue Note Records. This Time the Dream's On Me; Delilah; But Not For Me; Phinupi; Love, Your Spell is Everywhere; Scotch Blues; Weaver of Dreams; Swingin'; Chitlins Con Carne; Soul Lament; Midnight Blue; These Foolish Things; Hackensack; Freedom. PERSONNEL: Various It's fairly easy to review one of these "Artist Selects" compilations--after all, unless the performer is self- deluded, or sentimental about a unpopular song, how can one of these CDs, where the artist selects and sequences his own work, be bad? That's certainly the case with Kenny Burrell: The Artist Selects, which features some of the best work of one of the most important jazz guitarists who emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. In each track, Burrell provides an ample foundation upon which his bandmates ably build. Besides Burrell's stellar musicianship, the fourteen tracks, all produced by Alfred Lion, also feature performances from such notables as Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Tina Brooks, Stanley Turrentine, Ray Barretto, Jimmy Smith, and Herbie Hancock, among others. Standouts, at least for this Jazz Messenger fan, include the hard-driving Scotch Blues and Swingin'; Delilah, featuring Candido Camero on the bongo drums, also lingers in memory.
