Artie's RARE Classical recordings for Columbia and more!, October 1, 2007

After waiting seemingly forever for Artie's Classical recordings for Columbia to get released, it's finally appeared on this import cd. Normally, the remastering quality for imports are inferior to the American releases, but this one sounds great. The 1949 Gramercy 5 recordings have wonderful fidelity. You'd be hard pressed to tell that it was recorded in 1949. The remake of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes has it all over the original. Shaw's full, mellow tone, combined the "modern" bop type feel, and the excellent fidelity makes this one of the most enjoyable recordings in Shaw's career, and indeed is one of the highlights of this great cd. The classical recordings are surprising. Considering the few classical pieces Shaw recorded, we should be grateful that these recordings exist. This liner notes are outstanding and highly informative. Complete with rare photos. This is one of the best Shaw cd's out there. If you collect Artie, this is a must buy!
