This review is from: Artistry in Chip Carving: A Lyrical Style (Schiffer Book for Woodcarvers) (Paperback)
This book has a few patterns for an artistic approach to chip carving but the book is not really that great as all there are is a few patterns and really not worth the price unless you are building a chip carving library as I was.

Disappointing for traditional chip carving,
This review is from: Artistry in Chip Carving: A Lyrical Style (Schiffer Book for Woodcarvers) (Paperback)
While the book is well done, it is primarily a brief introduction of a somewhat "experimental" adaptation of chip carving focusing on animal relief figure carving. From that perspective it is interesting, although almost the entire text focuses on one animal, a giraffe. There are a number of illustrations showing the basics and a few additional images of some other animals. It is definitely not based on Swiss chip carving style, a target audience to which the book is apparently targeted by advertisers. While the price wasn't exorbitant, I wouldn't have purchased the book had I known more clearly about the book's focus. For someone already knowledgeable with wood carving, the content of the book is likely to be of little useful assistance. I did read the entire book and then put it away. I'm not a traditional chip carving expert, but I've done enough wood carving through the years, read enough books and listened to experts enough to have an idea about useful innovations. This isn't the place to look.
