4.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book June 28, 2003

Finally an artbook that doesn't put you to sleep when you read it. I have never liked the dry technical stuf often found in big museum books. its good stuff to help with insomnia! But Davies had written a good book for the typical reader. I was only in Cape Ann once as a kid. The pictures bring back memories. A friend of mine who is a painter practically keeps the book open in his studio! I had no idea that Edward Hopper ever painter on Cape Ann.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art; Intelligent and interesting writing October 6, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
A fascinating read. At first I flipped through the book, reading the biographies of the artists I liked. Sufficiently hooked, I went back and read the entries on all the other artists. A lot of information is packed into about 150 pages, but the book never has a boring, text-book like feel. (If anything, I wish the book were longer!) Davies' writing really makes the artists come alive. The artwork is interesting, but more interesting were the stories behind the artwork and the role Cape Ann played in the artists' lives and works.
