Editorial Reviews

Review

"A must for artists of all types." -- Art Times

"Artists Communities . . . is one of those books that comes along all too infrequently, providing not only an indispensable tool for artists of every discipline, but also a rare picture of a moment in American art history. The directory provides two-page profiles and photographs of 70 leading artists' communities (once called colonies'), as well as an overview of the field. . . . Poet Stanley Kunitz writes an introduction and four artists provide accounts of their experiences at The MacDowell Colony (New Hampshire), The Yard (Massachusetts), Ragdale (Illinois), and Sculpture Space (New York). Finally, the entries are augmented with a list of 40 other venues' that run residency programs in the U.S., and the addresses of 120 foreign residency programs. Besides being a great resource, the book is fun to peruse and wish over, and makes a lovely gif."t -- High Performance

"Based on information from 70 institutions throughout the United States, this directory was compiled to inform artists around the country, and . . . to improve general understanding of the field among artists, educational institutions, government and private policy makers, and the general public. To be included in the guide, these institutions had to meet several criteria: the primary purpose of the organization is to support artists; the organization brings artists together into a community, removing them from everyday obligations and providing uninterrupted time to work; artists are selected through a formal admissions process; and the organization is nonprofit, has artists on its governing boards, and maintains a paid professional staff.

Each listing includes details about the founding of the organization, its mission, location, artistic direction, facilities, housing, meals, season, average length of residencies, average number of artists present at one time, application deadline and fee, selection process, stipends, artists' expenses, and duties, other accommodations, public programs, past artists, contact address and telephone, as well as a quote from the director. . . .

To give readers a sense of what residencies are like in general, the directory includes comments by four artists--a film maker, writer, choreographer and sculptor--about their experiences at a few of these communities. . . .

The guide also includes a list of programs that are similar to the 70 artists' communities, but did not fit all the criteria; many only provide single-person residencies, fellowships, studio collectives, workshops or apprenticeships." -- Ceramics Monthly

"Browsing through this easy-to-reference book will inspire you to apply to at least one of the 70 programs listed. Nice pictures of each community." -- ArtSource Quarterly

"Compiled by the Alliance of Artists' Communities, a consortium based in Portland, Oregon . . . the book begins with an overview of the growth of artists' communities and a piece by the poet Stanley Kunitz extolling their virtues." -- The Chronicle of Philanthropy

"Includes information on approximately 70 organizations which offer residency programs for painters, writers, composers, sculptors, film makers, photographers, performance artists, story-tellers, choreographers, installation artists, architects, art historians, scientists, and scholars." -- Sculpture

"Whether you're a city playwright gasping for a breath of country air or a hibernated author who's inspired by sun and surf, an urban scribe yearning to slow life's pace or a rural writer looking to speed it up--chances are there is a retreat which can offer you the perfect, creativity-stirring change of pace. For playwrights seeking more information . . . help may be found in the pages of Artists Communities. The reference book was put together by the Alliance of Artists' Communities, a national consortium of organizations and individuals established to improve the environment in which artists' communities support artists. All in all, the guide details 3,600 residencies currently available to artists of every stripe, including nine sites which were discovered only while putting the book together." -- Backstage

Don't skip the introductions and preface - they present an excellent overview of what artists' are and what they can provide for creative people. The standardized format of the individual entries and the categorized indices make it easy to narrow your choices and decide which communities you want to find more about.
