1.0 out of 5 stars This book is a poor guide for beginners & no "Artist's hndbk, September 20, 1998
This review is from: The Artist's Handbook: A Step-By-Step Guide to Drawing, Watercolor, and Oil Painting (Hardcover)
This book is of little use to beginners as it does not offer a progressive method to help one learn to either draw or paint. It is most certainly not an "...Artist's Hanbook" as it doesen't even begin to touch on the interests and problems of artists. The first book I would recommend to beginners and/or intermediate/advanced students for learning how to learn to draw is THE NATURAL WAY TO DRAW by Kimon Nicolaides. For beginning Painters I would recommend LEARNING [or STARTING} TO PAINT IN OILS by Bernard Dunstan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A to Z techniques for all forms of materials, July 20, 2007
By
I was really pleased to see all the options available. This book has a comprehensive format, the styles include: Soft pencils; Colored pencils; Drawing with Erasers; Seeing Colour in White; Crosshatching; Broken Colour; Conte Crayons (British version of crayola); Blending; Line and Wash; Pastel Pencils; Charcoal and Chalk; and Frottage.

The book uses a picture format to teach the technique so that the artist is able to develop their picture on a step by step basis as they see the process unfold within the book.

I think this is a fine primer for anyone wanting to explore their interests and development basic technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide for the Experienced, November 30, 2004

If you have no idea where to start with painting and drawing I recommend "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

This Artist's Handbook is a terrific resource for those with some experience who are looking to expand their range of skills.

The section on using pastels was particularly helpful.

A great value, quality art book!
