I originally bought the Artopgraph Light Tracer II, which, while less expensive, is a more cumbersome plastic box that is lit with a fluorescent bulb. Although it is a good product, I decided to return it and purchase this Lightpad instead, for one reason. The Lightpad is very thin--it's even slim enough to slide onto a bookshelf. It's so much easier to store away without having to find space in a closet (with all the other craft items!). Bonus, it comes with a protective sleeve to keep it safe when not in use.

The screen is smaller than the plastic tracer, but here's my solution: I'm tracing an Impressionist painting onto needlepoint canvas. Canvas size is 18 X 23. I went to Hobby Lobby and had the framing department cut a piece of clear acrylic 19 X 24; I then taped the painting and canvas securely to the acrylic and I move it around on the lightpad to trace the picture. It works perfectly. Great product. Highly recommended.

This thin pad is so powerful. When the sales person turned it on for me I was floored. She first turned on the Light tracer II and then this one. Light Tracer had somewhat of a gradient look when lit. Which is due to the fact that the light sits near the top of the box. It gets a slight bit dimmer towards the bottom. But with this the whole dang screen was lit beautifully and vibrant. You pay a bit more but don't waste money on sub-par tools. It looks like its built to last.

The light box is super bright, really thin and strong with a real metal frame. It's all pro's with no cons.

I was looking for a medium to large light table type device that would not take up alot of space when not in use. Preferably LED based for durability and low operating costs.

My Desires
o LED
o Compact. In relation to the large usable workspace.

Pros
+ LED Lighting, even enough for sketch/drafting work. May not be bright enough for someone looking to use it with slides.
+ Compact. The 17" x24" usable area has a border of 1 3/8" on all sides to the edge of the 5/8" thick aluminum frame. This is a good amount of usable space to tape your work down if desired.
+ Frame. The frame is smooth and squared/true making it function quite well as a strait/parallel border if you want to use it with a T-Square to draft with.
+ Cool running. The LED lights don't heat up like some old fashioned light tables.
+ Bright. I had to lay down 7 sheets of 98lb bond (160g) Canson Mix Media paper to completely block out the light from the table getting through. Of course it is unusable before seven sheets but how many depends on your needs. Because the light is diffused through the plastic work surface, using it with velum over 26lb printer paper was bright and usable without being overpowering to stare at for extended periods in a moderately lit room.

Cons
- For consistency (at least with American page sizes), I'd prefer an 18" x 24" usable workspace. Never the less I usually have just enough margins that I can position my work to accomodate all the important details without having to shift around.

Wow. Where was this technology when I really needed it??

I got the 12x17 light pad, which is just the right size for 90% of the work I will use it for.
It's also about 1/6th the thickness of my old light box and has nicely rounded corners so it's comfortable when I lean it on my lap.
It's bright enough without being too bright, which is very easy on my eyes. The image shows through 2 pages of 150 lb bristol board perfectly.

I've had an 18x24 light box for 20 years. It's always worked well but it was too big and I always had to mask off the areas that surrounded the art I was tracing off because otherwise it blinded me.
It was also three inches thick and had sharp metal corners that never failed to dig into one or another of my legs or scratch the table top when I slid it up off of my lap.
The only advantage to my old light box was that it had 4 florescent tubes in it, triggered in pairs (1 & 3 and/or 2 & 4), so I could choose how bright it was and where the real bright spot was.

I'll keep my old light box for those few things I work on that are too large for my light pad but I'll have to clean the dust off of it because it will be sitting and waiting for those rare instances.

I've been using light tables for over 40 years in the printed circuit industry. From beautiful hardwood funiture quality frames to electric lift and tilt monstrosities.

Recently I found the need for a light box at home to trace patterns for art glass. I was looking at the 12" x 18" LightTracer II and it seemed alright for around $60 until I walked into my local Hobby Lobby and got an up close look at the LightTracerII. It looked like plastic crap. Then I spotted the LightPad A930 and was blown away by the quality of construction and evenness of the light output. I would like to have the LightPad A950 and eventually will, but until I save up my money the A930 will do just fine.

When It comes to tools, you truely do get what you pay for. All my life I've always spent the extra money for quality tools and have never regretted a single tool purchase. If you are looking for a lightbox and don't mind moving your larger items around for coverage, then you should not regret the purchase of the LightPad A930.

The A930 truely is the nicest light box/table I have ever used!
