What is the difference between research that uses art, research about art, and research through art? Is arts-based educational research (ABER) a method or medium? What does arts-based research look like? How is it used and evaluated? Editors Cahnmann-Taylor and Siegesmund recruited an arresting array of contributors: paradigmatic pioneers, noted artist-scholars, as well as newcomers to the field. This volume condenses the history, unique features, social contributions, and controversy into a readable, scholarly, and practical text. Each artist-researcher develops a chapter comprised of multiple elements: biography, explanation of intent, critique, photos and open-ended questions. True to ABER epistemology, these contributors cultivate more questions than answers. This text will appeal to doctoral students and faculty, including those from disciplines other than education. The multi-voiced and diverse artists' offerings make it a useful resource, and the chapter-end questions lend value as a workbook. I am new to arts-based research and found this book to be readable, understandable, enjoyable and useful. Many of the chapters can stand alone and it is not necessary to read the book sequentially (but you should read all of it; it's content is so varied). The chapters are brief and this makes it easy to quickly mine the book for specific scholarly information. It is a great book for those who look for a (deeper) understanding of what Arts Based Educational Research is about. From its history and basic matters to current works in the field, authorities in ABER give readers a taste of what it is, how it feels and what it takes to be an arts-based researcher in Education. Great book.
