Editorial Reviews

Review

"Robbin Obomsawin is the mistress of small, startling homes that blend the beauty of timbers with conventional architecture." (Ottawa Citizen )

From the Inside Flap

The rich Arts & Crafts heritage created by William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene is transforming cabin design.

Much like the original Arts & Crafts movement in the late 1800s that was a reaction against elaborate and mass-produced machine-made goods, today's log building world is turning away from the kit-manufactured cabin and toward handcrafted designs in the Arts & Crafts spirit to create homes that are inspired by nature and built to last.

In her fifth book, author Robbin Obomsawin takes you on a tour of 25 home plans that relate to the natural environment, incorporate porches and windows, and are simple in design but showcase the natural materials from which they are made. These are cabins with open floor plans that encourage family life, a relationship with the ideals of simplicity, utility, and handcraftsmanship and illustrate Gustav Stickley's dream that "a home should give a sense of peace and comfort."

The Arts & Crafts Cabin is not just a décor but also a way of life where simplicity in itself can be sensational. Whether you are building a first home, desire a one-of-a-kind weekend retreat, or wish to transform an average home into one of rustic elegance or storybook charm, these pages are filled with helpful designs to punctuate any home's interior and exterior.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading but beautiful, August 16, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Arts & Crafts Cabin (Hardcover)
Being familiar with some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books, I bought this book expecting detailed house plans and handcrafted log architecture. After all, it's called "The Arts and Crafts ***Cabin***," right? And the picture on the front of that beautiful stained-glass door shows logs, doesn't it?

Well, this book is beautiful. You'll drool over the pictures. but a planbook it's not. And a log-building book it's not. And none of the residences here would qualify as a "cabin," most are opulent estates. There's nary a plan in the entire book. And almost none of the houses shown are built with logs as a primary element. Most are timberframes; many pictures show no log elements at all!

If you want to learn a bit about Arts and Crafts architecture or decorating, you may find some ideas here. But if you are designing a floorplan for a handcrafted log home and want it to have an Arts and Crafts feel, unfortunately, this isn't the right book.

I liked the quality of the photos. The detail design pictures were especially helpful. I also liked the links to the resources. I would recommend this book to others who have an interest in timberframe and arts & crafts design.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book full of ideas and ideals!, September 12, 2005

This review is from: The Arts & Crafts Cabin (Hardcover)
If you want any ideas to decorate, design and build your log cabin along the Arts & Craft lines, this is the source! It is full of beautiful architecture, design ideas and tips. My poor contractor has had to keep looking at this book to see what I want in my log home, but he's been enjoying it too.
