Editorial Reviews

Review

"This handsome, 96-page book describes how to identify, collect, and re-create the distinctively patterned linens that were often found in Craftsman bungalows in the early part of the 20th century." (Sunset magazine )

From the Inside Flap

Since the late 1800s, the simple pleasures--a scented pillow, an embroidered table runner, or stenciled curtains--have been the details that enhance the elegance of the American Arts & Crafts home. Antique pieces are becoming more scarce in todays collector's market, so not only is it a delight to own one but a challenge to preserve it. Complete with a section on how to care for and display vintage textiles in the home, Arts & Crafts Textiles is an introduction to the American textiles movement and a great resource for contemporary makers. As with other furniture and accessories from the Arts & Crafts period, marvelous reproductions and inspired originals are being handcrafted today. Among the results are lovely window shades and coverings, one-of-a-kind linens, and accessories. Whether it's the comfort of a Stickley pinecone design, the grace of a Candace Wheeler textile, or useful homemade gift from a woman's magazine, the result is the same--simple, natural elegance. 5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate resource for Arts & Crafts textiles, October 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Arts & Crafts Textiles (Hardcover)
This book is the finest of its kind. While other books on the period touch on textiles, this is the only book dedicated to the subject. For anyone decorating an Arts & Crafts home or with an interest in period design or creative needlework, it is the ultimate resource. The author not only knows her subject intimately, but presents the information in a clear and exceptionally readable style. As a designer specializing in period interiors, this book is one that I will suggest to my clients again and again!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource by a Noted Expert, October 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Arts & Crafts Textiles (Hardcover)
Ann Wallace is nationally recognized as an expert on fabrics and textiles of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. She has developed her knowledge both through academic and practical experience.

This book reflects her experience and knowledge. It is a "must have" book for anyone interested in the history of the Craftsman Movement in the U.S., and especially for anyone who is acquiring or collecting textiles from the period, or contemporary work done in the Craftsman Style.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lite book on the subject, February 26, 2000
This review is from: Arts & Crafts Textiles (Hardcover)
I appreciate this book because books on Arts and Crafts Textiles are few and far between. However, I would have loved to spend a lot more money and gotten a much more comprehensive book! I want more pictures--hoards of them--of textiles from the collections of zillions of people and museums. This book whets the appetite, but leaves room for more. It is a good quick introduction. Now I need something with lots of meat.
