This is a comprehensive catalogue of the important collection of Indian art in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a celebration of the diverse cultures that coexist in India. An introductory essay is followed by the art objects presented in four sections according to the traditional forms of Indian art: sculpture, painting, decorative arts and textiles. The sections on sculpture and painting are further subdivided chronologically according to stylistic periods; the decorative arts and textiles, most of which date from around 1650 to 1900, are grouped by medium (make, metalwork, wool, cotton etc).

The curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Dye provides a comprehensive catalogue raisonn of the museum's Indian arts collection. The book is divided into four sections covering sculpture, painting, decorative arts, and textiles. Each group is further divided chronologically by period and by region, with essays introducing each division and subdivision. Each entry of the collection, which ranges from 1200 B.C.E. to the early 20th century, is documented with title, date, medium, size, provenance, exhibition history, and notes. The appendixes include translations of texts and inscriptions and technical studies of objects in the section on decorative arts. The only criticism is that the photographs in this lavishly illustrated work are not of the finest quality.
