This review is from: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli plays Beethoven and Mozart (Audio CD)
Michelangeli reminds me of Heifetz in that he had a stupendous technique, but didn't seem to have any special insights into the music's depths. This performance of Mozart's 20th is in much better sound than his recording with Giulini Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20 & 23 and has a better orchestra and conductor than Piano Concerti 20 & 25 with Garben. To complain about a conceptual lack of depth while a pianist demonstrates such a beautiful and elegant sound makes one feel rather like an ingrate. (I don't recall that Arther Miller ever complained about Marilyn Monroe's intellectual shortcomings.) Nor can I find any particular fault with his phrasing or architecture; the fact that it is in a very romantic (non HIP) style will not bother many.

His performance of the Beethoven Sonata is very dynamic, very lyrical, and generally beyond reproach. I would rank it at the very top with Richter and Gilels.
