Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8--Each of these series entries is divided into three parts: "Story," "Pictures," and "Notebook." The stories are of youngsters training for a career in which one or both of their parents are already engaged. Aru, 12, will follow his father as village medicine man. This book goes into great detail about the geography of and tribal life in the Solomon Islands. For readers without extensive geographical background, this title could lead to a lot of confusion. The fact that the Solomon Islands is the name for a group of islands in the South Pacific, only some of which are part of the country called the Solomon Islands, is very confusing. Also, much of the data given differs with standard reference sources. Maud has very little to do with France. Her family's circus is based there, but performances mentioned in the book are in other countries. Maneuvers she practices are named but not explained. The "Pictures" sections are the books' strong points. Colorful, lively, captioned full-color photographs make the childrens' lives seem more real. The "Notebook" section in Maud gives some historical highlights of the circus and some renowned performers. According to the author, however, the circus's popularity declined in the 1960s, coinciding with "the appearance of an entirely new form of entertainment--the television." Television gained great popularity before 1960. Both "Notebook" sections have five-inch, three-column formats, with numerous pictures interspersed. Less experienced readers are sure to have trouble following them. Both of these titles are limited in use and potential audience appeal.
