5.0 out of 5 stars Best hanging feeder BY FAR!, May 20, 2010

I've looked at every hanging feeder there is and I just got rid of one of those squirrel buster brome jobs. That thing was lame and the squirrels chewed it up around the holes where the food is and rain seemed to make it's way into the feeder and i actually ended up growing things in it!!!

The skycafe is ominous looking at first but after a day or so it blends right in to the yard. It is big:) The birds love it and it's fun watching the squirrels fall off of it. The only thing I could say I would change about it would be the little rubber grommet that is located on top, the squirrels chewed it up in about a day but that's no biggie.

I'd definitely buy another one should something happen to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes,it is sqirrell proof !, October 13, 2010

I originally had a fly-through feeder, which turned out to be a popular hangout for the local squirrel population. I didn't have very much bird action at all.
After extensive research online,I chose the Arundale Sky Cafe. Now it is all birds all the time.
About a month or so after I put the Sky Cafe into action,I mounted the fly-through feeder on a post, with a large(22 inch),baffle. The sqirrells have been unable to gain access to this feeder,Which makes very happy.
The interesting thing is that the birds prefer the Sky Cafe, about four to one.
I highly recommend this feeder,if you follow the instructions for placement,i think you will be quite satisfied as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arundale 362 Sky Cafe Wild Bird Feeder - Pure Genius!, July 27, 2011

Great! Mine arrived with all the parts, including the seed baffles. It actually arrived 2 days sooner than expected. Not bad for free shipping!

I have spent about 3 months this year, trying to cope with the grey squirrels around here. It is wooded all around my property. My first bird feeder was a cedar one from Walmart. Suspended from two points and built like a small house with a pitched roof and access on both sides, the birds loved it, and so did the squirrels. They could empty it in a single day. So, I decided to feed the squirrels on the ground in the hopes that they would ignore the bird feeder. Enter the raccoon. He kept emptying the squirrel feeder nightly, causing the furry tree rats to revert to the bird feeder. It was very frustrating! At one point I counted 7 squirrels taking advantage of the banquet.

So, I bought a second Walmart feeder that was round and suspended from a single cable. That feeder I set up with an inverted funnel on its top. This thwarted the squirrels for about two days, until they learned to catch the perch as they slid off the top edge, then, suspended from underneath, they chewed away the tray underneath the seed holes causing the seed to spill out onto the ground. It was made from some kind of green molded epoxy. No good, but it gave me the idea that if I could make the roof too steep, as it was with the inverted funnel, and wide enough, I might be able to forestall the squirrels from eating at the birds expense. I jumped on the Internet to try and find a sturdy round suspended bird feeder on which I might place a larger funnel. That's when I found the Sky Cafe.

Since hanging the Sky Cafe, I've seen only one squirrel give a try. Three times, after craftily studying the targeted feeder, it carefully climbed down from the tree limb and tried to establish itself on top of the feeder. Three times it had to leap away as it lost its purchase. No seeds were spilled in the process. I just put the feeder up today, so stay tuned!

After reading other posts on this feeder, I decided to take additional steps to avoid moisture intrusion. From the tree limb, my feeder is suspended from a length of aluminum tubing. On the top end, it is bent into a hook that sits across the limb. At the bottom end, a very tight 180 degree hook provides a hanger for a length of cable, scavenged from the chewed up feeder, that replaces the chain included with the Sky Cafe. This plastic coated steel cable is fed through the rubber and steel washer supplied with the Sky Cafe, then through a red inverted funnel, then through a black plastic tube sleeve that is about 2.5 inches wide and 3 feet long. The tube extends past the loop where the cable hangs on the aluminum tube. The idea is to prevent the squirrel from having access to the rubber washer, as well as to prevent accumulation of rain running down the cable and into the seed bin. It also provides additional distance between the squirrel's last purchase point and the edge of the roof. That purchase, which is the 2.5 inch wide plastic tube sleeve, is a very poor one for the squirrel. It holds on there with each of its hind legs clutching the tube from either side. It then must stretch across the floppy bell shaped funnel and try to gain purchase on the still steeply sloped clear plastic roof of the Sky Cafe, all of which gives a little under the weight of the squirrel. It's simple. It's pure genius!
