I have noticed that at least the first four of five reviews of "AsIam" are from women and so this one will be from the perspective of a middle-aged white male - and from an individual who is more of a "realist" than a "spiritualist" on the spirituality-realism continuum. That said, AsIam provides an interesting examination of our culture and society and (more importantly) our individual role within it. The book combines concepts of Karl Jung's dream analysis, the Meisner acting method and Kabbalah with quotes ranging from Thomas Edison to Christopher Robin to provide a number of "Aha" moments. Being from Santa Monica, the metaphor on p. 107 of the homeless man pushing the cart down the street has particular resonance for me. While the book focuses on "dharma" (we all have a specific purpose) and the "dharma zone", it most affected me in three areas: acceptance, forgiveness and willingness to change. As a direct result of this book, I have been able to address two past relationships in which I felt particularly aggrieved (acceptance and forgiveness) and will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro next month (willingness to change). I guess that this is a pretty good outcome for any book and thus worth a five-star rating.

Alanna's ability to explain and share her insight into sprituality and human behavior is so powerful!!! She uses her own life in examples to help the reader better understand how she was able to find her way to the Darma Zone. This book is a guide for anyone who wants either to start or continue their journey towards self discovery.
"The past does not exist unless you carry the remains of it with you."...my favorite quote from the book!!!!

If you are a yoga practitioner who would like to become more introspective and feel that something's missing from your life, this book offers a plan on how to begin that journey.

The first part of the book is about why we are the way we are.

The second part of the book offers a plan on how to change our lives. To do this, the author provides a 21-day plan that includes yoga, meditation, walking, journaling and a food plan. Her intent is to help the reader detoxify physically and mentally and to renew one's self.

I must say, I thought, as a full-time worker bee, who has time to practice yoga for 21 minutes and walk for 21 minutes not once, but twice a day? However, if you commit to 21 days and avoid distractions, it could be done. It wouldn't be easy, but great rewards usually don't come easily.

Even if you don't follow the 21-day plan, there are benefits to reading the book. This is definitely a book I will reread, and when the time is right, I'll follow the 21-day plan in its entirety. The author has a Facebook group for those who want to join the 21-day plan: the Dharma Zone.

Highly recommend the read personally!! Professionally, the tool Alanna has developed has been used successfully in our Medical Centre. She is insightful, articulate and has created a system for someone to self-reflect, along with providing practical tools to implement to find your passion and purpose (Dharma). These tools tackle such issues as forgiveness, acceptance, and a willingness to change along with meditation, yoga and nutritional tips. Her use of personal life experiences brings such a poignant human element to the book. Five stars for an excellent vehicle for self discovery.
