4.0 out of 5 stars As she came of age
Hello to all Sarah Brightman fans. I literally bumped into this CD while shopping in amazon.com.. Made in 1990, when Sarah's solo career took off, it's probably where Sarah's inspiration for the Victorian genre came from.We see this on the front cover of the album. The album's british-based with accoustic guitars and little to no keyboard. "As I came of age"...

1.0 out of 5 stars What was she thinking??
There is no possible excuse for this album. Whoever is responsible for chaining Sarah Brightman's divine voice to this atrocious selection of mediocrities ought to be sentenced to a lifetime of listening to William Shatner sing rap songs in subway tunnels. She sleepwalks through the entire thing, with the possible exception of the rather pretty title song, and only...

4.0 out of 5 stars As she came of age, March 24, 2001
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
Hello to all Sarah Brightman fans. I literally bumped into this CD while shopping in amazon.com.. Made in 1990, when Sarah's solo career took off, it's probably where Sarah's inspiration for the Victorian genre came from.We see this on the front cover of the album. The album's british-based with accoustic guitars and little to no keyboard. "As I came of age" can almost adopt the soft rock category, but much better categorized under easy-listening. While listening to this cd, I felt like I stepped into a landscape in England. That's the feeling the tracks give.

The tracks list is as follows: 1) The river cried 2) Something to believe in 3) As I came of age 4) Take my life 5) Some girls 6) Brown eyes

7) Love changes everything (the only song to have made it to the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection)

8) Good morning starshine 9) Alone again or 10) Yesterday 11) Bowling green 12) It must be tough...to be that cool

All the songs are ok, but because they weren't introduced to the USA or Canada, they are rare to me. I find that the best songs are tracks 1,3,7,11 and 12. The producer of "as I came of age" is neither Lloyd Webber nor Frank Peterson. The recording is produced and written by Val Garay. Look for a sexy "Barbie doll-esque" black & white photo of Sarah inside.

There's not much else to say. The album's more or less a take it or leave it creation, or shall I say love or hate?

4.0 out of 5 stars Just love Sarah Brightman, October 23, 2000
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
I have been a big fan of Sarah Brightman's for ages, and this was the first CD of hers that I bought. While I wouldn't say that this is my all time favourite Sarah Brightman CD, it is one that I listen to quite often. I think that she sings 'Love Changes Everthing' so much better than either Michael Ball or Peter Cousins (from the 'Aspects of Love' show). Another favourite song on this CD is 'Good Morning Starshine'. She has such a clear voice, that 'As I Came of Age' is always a delight to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Major Fan, March 14, 2000

I have ten of her CD's and this is one my favorites. I listen to it over and over again. She has such a range from pop to new age to showtunes to opera. This CD shows her early years as a pop singer. This one is a must to add to any Brightman collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Brightman, but still better than most!, June 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
This album is so different from everything else Ms. Brightman's ever done, including its closest cousins "Dive" and "Fly". But, that's not a bad thing. This is almost a pure "pop" album, but it's one of the best of the genre I've ever heard. If you're looking for her opera-esque singing, buy "Time to Say Goodbye". If you want some trippy but fun songs by the Singing Angel, get "As I came of Age".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Brightman albums, October 25, 1999

This is one of those albums that you either love or hate. I found that the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. I especially like the title track, "The River Cried", and "Good Morning Starshine".

4.0 out of 5 stars A different side of Sarah, September 6, 1998

The songs on this CD are great, and showcases Sarah's pop side... Her rendition of Love Changes Everything is intimate and beautiful. The song Brown Eyes is lyrical and soothing. A must for any Brightman fan. It reminds the listener where she got her start.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Growing Sarah Brightman, July 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
Sarah's more recent albums are certainly better than this CD, however, if you like 80's pop music, then you should buy 'As I Came of Age'. Some of the songs may sound like slow country ballads, but the rest are pretty much up-beat 80's pop music. If you're a Sarah Brightman fan, you will be able to tell that this CD was made when she was still starting out and when she had not gotten into her own groove yet. 'As I Came of Age' is still a fun CD to listen to, however, and I do not regret buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very different, but good, October 30, 2004
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
Not many people know about this album, but being a die hard Sarah fan, I bought it to add to my collection. This is defenitally not the kind of Sarah Brightman music everyone is used to hearing so you need to have an open mind. Some of my favorite tracks on this cd are "The River Cried", "Brown Eyes", "Good Morning Starshine", and "Alone Again Or". This cd has a different feeling to it that I can't quite explain. It's very pop-ish and has an 80's sound to it. Just keep in mind that the music on this cd is in a completely different category than her other cd's. If you are a big Sarah fan or a collector of her music, I recommend this cd because its worth the buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A differnt side of sarah..., November 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: As I Came of Age (Audio CD)
I am a huge fan of Ms. Brightman's, but this is not my most favorite of her recordings. The music is very twangy, almost sounding like a country style. If you're a fan of Sarah's you'll want this Cd simply to hear something different, if you're not a true fan I would veer away from this one and get either Timeless or Fly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tunes but not standard Brightman., March 1, 2004

Frist of all this album shows you just how versatile Ms. Brightman can be. Her versatility is her most postive contribution as a performing artist.
The songs on this Album are very catchy and nice to sing along with. The tempo is up beat and it's very very 80s. Sarah, of course, has a nice voice; but it is neither the breathy whisper of her current pop or the soaring sweetness of her rich soprano. This shows Sarah as a full-blown pop artist. If you are mostly a Eden, La Luna, and Time To Say Goodbye Brightman fan then you will not be likely to really enjoy this album.
For my own part I really liked it and think it is worth the purchase and the listening experience. Perhaps this means I'm simply too fond of Sarah Brightman, but I think not, it is a good sample of late 80s pop; if you like that you'll like this.
What I find truly fascinating is that we get a differnt aspect of Sarah's voice; something more akin to her music theatre voice, but more pop oriented. A deeper, lower octave, and more upbeat sounds marks her performance. This is something I would love to hear her incorporate with the soft pop and siren soprano that she currently relies on (as this would manifest her versatility in even more creative ways).
