Editorial Reviews

Born to teenaged parents in a small town, sixteen-year-old Lucy Diamond (Sarah Bolger, Once Upon a Time) longs for a traditional family, but with an immature working mother (Claire Danes, My So-Called Life, Homeland) and a strict, frequently absent father (James Marsden, X-Men, Enchanted) she is mostly on her own.  As she senses her parents' emotional distance, Lucy grows close to her childhood best friend, Kevin (Thomas Mann, Beautiful Creatures), who soon becomes her first sexual partner.  After he abruptly moves away, Lucy struggles to make sense of her fledgling sex life, plan for her future, and help her mother start over again.  Featuring an all-star cast that includes Jeremy Sisto (Waitress), Jon Tenney (The Closer), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) and Peter Fonda, AS COOL AS I AM is an insightful coming-of-age story that captures the real drama and bittersweet moments of adolescence.

"If memory is malleable then the future is too." Lucy is a sixteen year old girl who is too smart for her own good. She spends her free time learning how to cook and hanging out with her friend Kenny. Her mother (Danes) and father (Marsden) had her when they were young and not ready for that responsibility. Now with her dad gone all but 4 times a year and her mom acting like a kid herself Lucy is left to discover life for herself. This is a movie that again proves my point that a movie can be entertaining and worth watching involving great acting rather then special effects. This is a movie along the line of What Maisie Knew only involving an older child rather then a 6 year old. Parents that should not have been allowed to have children and a child who is more mature then the parents. You really root for Lucy the entire time and by the time the end come you feel extremely sorry for her as well as relief. That is a hard combination to achieve but that's what great writing and acting does. Overall, a great movie that is pretty depressing but I recommend this. I give it a B+.

5.0 out of 5 stars When your life goes down the ****er, serve Eggs Hell December 23, 2013
By c. j.
Format:DVD
This is a film based on a book by the same name. I haven't read the book before but the film stars Sarah Bolger, Claire Danes, James Marsden and Thomas Mann. Bolger plays Lucy, a 16 year old high school girl who is far too young to be experiencing the level of maturity forced upon her by her parents, Chuck and Lainee (respectively played by Marsden and Danes.) Chuck and Lainee had Lucy when they were about the same age as she is now and both of them were orphaned at early ages. Chuck grew up in a home for boys run by what must have been Hitler's relatives while Lainee lost her parents to a tragic car accident. The two of them found and fell in love, each other's only comfort and understanding then. But that was then and now it's sixteen years later and Chuck takes every opportunity to stay away from his family by working out of state, and is only home three weeks out of the year. And lately, they are not happy times with Lainee, who can't wait for Chuck and his morbidly religious moralistic spewings as parental warnings for their daughter and her friends to hit the road back to where he came from so that she can sneak off to her secret job in an advertising corporation, where she has an affair with two separate co-workers, periodically. And all the while Lucy is home cooking dinners she has learned to whip up by watching her favorite chef every evening on a cooking channel, pulling off A's in class, trying to keep Mr. Popular's mitts off of her, planning her future, coming up with new and unique ways in which to get rid of the bully of her bestfriend/sort-of-boyfriend (Thomas Mann) and oh yeah, survive her parents immature b. s. Whew! Talk about a mouth full. Lucy's only solace is (Mann) Kenny, an odd ball geek with a heart of gold. Read more ›

I'm a big Claire Danes fan and a s always she did a wonderful job in this move. I was very impressed with Sarah Bolger. This is the first film I've seen her in and I think she is a very talented young actress with a great future in film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Movie May 2, 2014

This movie was very true to life and that is the sad part. It had a semi-happy ending. The struggles of the young girl made her stronger and gave her the ability to survive.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars January 19, 2014

Not the absolute best movie ever, but definitely a good flick—way better than I had expected. mostly due to the two teenagers—they were very likable, and I'm a sucker for kids that have a very screwed up family life, and are still able to rise above and function with grace and maturity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real... enjoyment. December 30, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
This movie would be an excellent resource for beginning a discussion of "coming of age" topics between adults and teens. The actors deliver authentic portrayals in situations which ignited a lot of symbolic resonance for me. In several places I choose to stop watching (thanks to DVD and streaming) because the emotions that came up were quite intense. On whole it was a very worthwhile way to spend a few hours. I'm sure I will watch it again sometime.

4.0 out of 5 stars "AS COOL AS I AM" IS A FASCINATING RELATIONSHIP MOVIE August 11, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
"...the argument my parents weren't having."

A parallel-track movie about a working mother who isn't supposed to be working (Claire Danes) and a freewheeling daughter fixated on cooking while coming of age as a high school teen (Sarah Bolger). Both are going through discovery about their own relationship and relationships with males, as a lumberjack husband/father makes infrequent appearances. The actresses turn in stunning performances finding their way and working out their problems, as daughter Lucy and mom Lainie make quite a pair in this appealing movie. Master chef Mario Batali makes frequent appearances through his TV show. Everything is rushing towards two intense parallel scenes that are a reality check for mom and daughter. Focused mostly on the teen, nonetheless, the amazing Claire Danes steals every scene, despite Ms Bolger's convincing performance. A surprise cameo at the very end seals the deal on this enjoyable romantic comedy/drama. A Max Mayer movie, also starring James Marsden, Jeremy Sisto, and Thomas Mann. Very Definitely Recommended. Four WINSOME Stars! (Rated R for language and a few mild sexual scenes. Time-92 minutes.)

Cute movie, worth watching one time, but I wouldn't own it. It is a empowering story of a teenage girl's struggles to be her own parent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't quite capture the book.
It didn't quite capture the book. The young girl had long hair, not a crew cut which established her character in the novel, and she wasn't quite brash enough.
