Good read, March 19, 2011
This is a collection of 15 short stories in the fantasy or mildly science fiction mode (as opposed to hard SF), beautifully illustrated with black and white drawings by Magdalena Zmudzinska.
The stories are intriguing. I enjoyed them as just reading material, and then as I finished each, was interested to find that I was spending several minutes thinking about what I'd just read. They are very thought-provoking. Just one example: a race of aliens is welcomed to Earth and treated very well, in the hopes that they will share their technology with us. They believe that the Nazis were right, ethnic cleansing is good, and selective culling is a means of strengthening a society - but that is known only to a few humans. And you just found out. So what do you do? Announce to the world what you have learned about their beliefs? Stretch out the contact to get the tech, then build your own means of space travel and go see if you can find the "good guys"? And if this is what you do, what happens to Earth if it gets out that an advanced spacefaring race thinks the Holocaust was right?
I did find the style sometimes a little busy, a little confusing, but not to the detriment of my enjoyment. I found that if I was feeling muddled, continuing to read usually straightened me out - or it was not important to the gist of the story.
I particularly liked "Tir na nOg".
I'll be looking for more by this author.
