Book Description

March 29, 2005

USA Today bestselling and Rita Award-winning author Lorraine Heath has created a lush, emotional love story.

Camilla Hutchenson, countess, sponsor, darling of the ton, has reached a staggering level of social power. But one man has managed to distract her attention from her schedule of charity endeavours and teas—and not just because he holds the deed to her estate.

The man in question, Archibald Warner, is the new Earl of Sachse. Though at first meeting he suspects his new ward of being nothing more than a social bit of fluff, the more time passes, the more he finds himself drawn to her. But there is something she is hiding from him, and she hesitates to show him her real heart, even though she wishes she could learn to trust him with it. For somehow she knows . . . if only she can give him the chance, he will teach her everything she could hope to learn about love.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Lorraine Heath wrote her first story at seven, and it involved a fisherman who fell in love with a mermaid. She has since moved on to writing about sexy cowboys and dashing English lords (and sometimes, cleverly, in the same book!). Publishers Weekly says she is a "master of her craft." She is, indeed, and along with being a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, she has won the RITA® Award, Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, and a Career Achievement Award.

More About the Author

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since, for both adult and young adult readers (as Rachel Hawthorne). Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA(R), a HOLT medallion, a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, three Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards, and several Texas Gold Awards. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA Today, Waldenbooks, and most recently, the New York Times.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Romance, March 30, 2005
This review is from: As an Earl Desires (Mass Market Paperback)
The new Earl of Sachse is a wonderful hero. Camilla's character is revealed slowly. She's a tortured heroine but not depressingly so. She was unhappily married to the cruel, old Earl and has taken on the task of training the new Earl in the ways of the ton. He was quite happy as a schoolteacher and does not fit into his new role very well.
The attraction between the two is strong and believeable.Camilla takes a while to warm up to but the reasons are revealed early on. I really enjoyed this book. There is an element of mystery but it involves the characters and not an actual bad guy. There's even a slightly surprising ending.
I love Lorraine Heath. She is vastly under rated. This book is emotional and drew me in with the characters and not some ignorant adventure. If you want adventure. Read Tom Clancy. If you want a good romance that stays focused on the characters. This one's for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charming Victorian Tale, April 8, 2005
This review is from: As an Earl Desires (Mass Market Paperback)
Heath's smooth storytelling quickly draws the reader into this charming, character-driven romance. I was delighted to find only one tortured character and even more pleased to find that it wasn't the hero but the heroine, Lady Camilla. I found the well-adjusted hero, Sachse, a breath of fresh air and the perfect foil for this heroine. Anyone seeking an enjoyable lovestory--one not loaded with murder and mayhem, but filled with sensuality and honesty--will find it in As An Earl Desires

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful, November 14, 2005
This review is from: As an Earl Desires (Mass Market Paperback)
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! It was a perfect love story. I extremely disagree with SusieQ's review. This book was not at all boring and it was extremely realistic. If you love historical romances, then please read this book. However, if you are not into lords, dukes, countesses, England, and all of that other stuff, then please read whatever you enjoy. Please do not read this and complain about it if you aren't into this type of book in the first place!!! This book is absolutely beautiful (as you can see SusieQ is the only one who disagrees here).
