A sparkling, different perspective on Celtic Music,
By A Customer
This review is from: As Fadas De Estrano (Audio CD)
Having listened to a LOT of Irish, Scottish, and Cape Breton Music, I found this album to be a wonderful different perspective on celtic music. This album was recorded live in Buenos Aires in 1995. The group's wonderful playing on Galician bagpipes (gaita), harp, and a variey of Galician instruments is exceptionally pretty.

Not complete,

(...) It would appear that judging from the list, about 4 songs are missing off the American issue. I bought the CD in Spain (release from Discmedi Blau), which is a double CD, and has 18 tracks. Among the songs apparently missing is an 11 minute version of "Gallaecia Fulget", which is one of the high points of their concert. Judging from the list of included songs on the American release, it should still be decent, but somehow I would feel ripped off if I had bought the American release and then later stumbled upon the Spanish issue.

Incredibly amazing,

This work is one of the bests albums in folk music ever done. It is focused on people, it is for everybody. Traditional Galician songs, but also from Ireland. You can feel the Celtic soul from the beginning to the end. It is, definetly, amazing (although the box with two CD's is even much, much better).

A Galician Treasure,
By
This review is from: As Fadas De Estrano (Audio CD)
Milladoiro is a Galician treasure. Their music is not just a different breed of Celtic music, some of the pieces are full of the colors and aromas from Galicia, Spain's Northwestern corner Spain. The album is a live concert played in Argentina, where many Galicians migrated.

I already owned another Milladoiro album I had bought years ago used, on a whim. Being a fan for Irish celtic music, I found the album to be very interesting, but a little difficult to appreciate at first. But once I got accustomed to the new sound, I was fascinated.
Most people do not realize that Celtic music is not limited to Ireland; the Celts were all over Western Europe, from Northern Spain to Britainy in France, and of course, the British Isles. Their style varies from one cultural area to another. The common "jigs" and "reels" of Ireland now seem somewhat staid and boring after hearing the rhythmic variability from the Spanish Celts. The reason for this, I think, is that the Moorish influence on Spain introduced rhythms that did not influence Irish music. Also, the Spanish Celtic music sounds at times very much like medieval madrigals. When I heard "As fadas de estraño nome" (Fairies of strange names), I was immediately enchanted. While the studio recordings of their other albums are flawlessly recorded, and are therefore quite beautiful, the live recording (performed in Argentina) was absolutely STUNNING. In this mix, the various instruments meld together gorgeously and organically, enveloping the listener in music that is at times soothing, at times eery, and always energetic and enjoyable. By the time I had heard the album several times, I was convinced that we Milladoiro fans are privileged to have in our collections a group of unrivaled talent that eclipses the famed "Chieftans" and makes them sound like "a tatty folk group". These guys are gifted musical geniuses. If you like Celtic music, BUY this album, sit back with a glass of your favorite beverage, CRANK up the volume and get ready to be moved.

Until today, this has been my one Milladoiro album.Rediscovering it in my extensive world music and celtic cd collection, i am enraptured. After carefully previewing the available Milladoiro cds currently available (01/2010)i have ordered many of their others. I am most thrilled by the older pre-vocalist version of the group, so this particular performance cd from Argentina, is just unbeatable for me, a true 10. And for those who enjoy the beauty of the Spanish language, you just cannot beat the announcer's melifluous introduction to this concert!

Infectiously fun,

After hearing one song by Milladoiro on a Green Linnet collection, this was the first of their recordings that I found. I love it. The lively songs are infectiously fun, and make me feel like dancing. The more plaintive ones are haunting. The energy of a live performance is captured faithfully (though I've never actually seen them live to compare, it certainly sounds like it's energetic!).

Chintzy,

This is a real shame. What should have been an absolutely stunning disc by Milladoiro in a live setting was instead slightly cheapened by the exclusion of many of the best tracks from the original SONIFOLK release out of Spain (which I advise viewers of this article to seek out). The packaging of the Green Linnet version is not quite as nice, and I feel it was a bad mistake to leave of some of the most boisterous tracks in favor of the more quiet, pastoral ones. A real waste.

Several pieces of their repertorie. Live recorded .,

Several masterpieces of Milladoiro routed in the deepest Galicia. Recorded "live" in their tour to America. Some schottish drums are included. I did not like three songs (reason I took off one start) Brilliant the rest.
