Wonderful play for 9 women.,

This review is from: As It is in Heaven - Acting Edition (Paperback)
I directed a production of this play and had a wonderful time with it. It depicts a particular period within the history of the Shakers. The dialogue is beautifully written and offers opportunities for great theatricality in addition to subtlety and depth--you don't always find both within a single script. This is written for 9 women and can be performed in a minimalistic style, using just chairs or benches and an assortment of handprops. The play also includes many of the Shaker songs, which can be sung a cappella. This would be an excellent choice for a high school or college drama department, which typically have many more female students and not as many good parts for them.
