This is a very well-written story about a person I have known for many years and hold in very high regard, although I was unaware of the details of his early life until reading this book. That makes it even more fascinating because Leon forged a life that anyone could take pride in and has never let his hardships get in the way of success. I knew him when we both worked at Polaroid and looked up to him as a mentor. He was one of the most creative of those I worked with. I recommend this book to those that want to better understand man's atrocities to man, yet want to see how someone has overcome those burdens to enrich all those that know him.

Lazer, Vasili, Eliezer, and Leon. Each name represents a different place, a unique moment in history, and an important chapter in Leon Rubinstein's life. By the time Leon was twenty one, he had identified with these four names. As I Am Presently Know by Leon Rubinstein and Emily Rubin, chronicles the fascinating and significant life of Leon Rubinstein. As I Am Presently Known describes Leon's life before World Ward II, explains the harsh changes that occurred during the Russian occupation of Poland, takes on the very personal atrocities of the Holocaust, and presents stories of Leon's reconstruction and journey to create a life in the United States.
Leon's voice is present throughout his story. Through his clear and confident tone, Leon enables his readers to participate in this story. As Leon walks us through his history and his interpretations of his experiences, you can hear Leon's strength and sincerity. As I Am Presently Known allows us to experience the honest voice of a survivor; from this voice, one can tap into the pain Leon has felt, and understand the detachment required for Leon to be move forward from the Holocaust.
In addition to experiencing the voice of a willful survivor, As I Am Presently Known pushes us to think about violence's affect on the individual, and the waves of people linked to that individual. There is no question that World War II has significantly affected Leon Rubinstein, and with this memoir we can also see the affects of violence and tragedy on communities, families, and future generations. In the last section of As I Am Presently Known, Leon reflects on how his experiences have affected his parenting; in this section, Leon states, "Surely, being a survivor impacted my children, but I never discussed it with them...I raised them the best I could.

Leon Rubinstein's story is amazing. This wonderful man went through so many unimaginable things, such hardships. That he survived the War at all is incredible, and that he emerged to tell his tale with such wisdom, insistence on accuracy, and in such a rich voice is a gift to all of us. This book, harrowing, at many moments deeply inspiring, and also, amazingly, touched with gentleness, is hard to put down. The story is important for everyone to know and to remember, especially in these dark times. Readers of life histories in general will also especially benefit from this new book--not only for the tale, for what Leon Rubinstein has to teach us, but also for the way Emily Rubin's deft and respectful presentation of Rubinstein's words showcases his very particular voice and allows readers to enter his story. She leads readers very elegantly from Rubinstein's childhood in Poland, to his story of survival, through a stint in the Russian army, to his time in Palestine as a young man looking for his future, and finally to his success in the U.S. as an amazing inventor. The different sections are extremely well-ordered and well-shaped: Rubinstein and Rubin's partnership has resulted in a very strong, important book. Highly recommended!
