5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Satire!
A work of comic genius. I assume that this book is a product of those zany minds that bring us The Onion and The Harvard Lampoon. This one really skewers the Religious Right and their attitudes towards women. My only criticism is that some points that the "Dr." makes are a little to extreme to be believed. The key to great satire, as I understand it, is to walk right...

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is a bad prescription for women's health, May 12, 2005
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
Even by the current administration's 'standards' of compassion, I am amazed that Hager honestly believes in the ideas which are found in this book for general medical practice. Prayer in addition to other treatments is one thing, but to proclaim that prayer itself is supposed to cure women is scary stuff.

Honestly, the first time I attempted to read through this title, I believed that it was a joke. I was concerned when I subsequently learned this was an administration pick for the advisory committee on reproductive health drugs for the Food and Drug Administration. This quack is actually in a prominent position to affect the well-being of myself and many other women in America.

I am concerned that the Bush administration takes such an approach to women's health, but (tellingly) feels that conventional medicine is good enough for men. If the faith based perspective in this book was good enough to apply to women's bodies, Hager ought to be applying the same standard to men.

Hager's very selective ideas of what is 'good treatment' reveal this doctor ultimately prescribes a bad prescription. Hager pointedly markets himself as a Christian physician, but since most of the Christians I am friends with also strike a balance between their own religious practice and the personal conscience and health of others, I am honestly not sure what to categorize him as.

He does not want to acknowledge that his particular brand of Christianity does not work for every person, and could even be medically inappropriate as a treatment itself in some cases which are ironically described in this book.

Still, this book does have some redemptive value. Give it to a medical student/doctor to encourage their serious practice of medicine while reminding them of what a good doctor ultimately is NOT.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quack and Hypocrite, May 14, 2005

This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
This quack played an important role in preventing women from being able to buy the morning after pill without a prescription.

It turns out that, according to his former wife, he is also an anal rapist. That's how he cares for women.

The fact that the Bush administration is willing to appoint quacks and hypocrites like this to important decision making positions demonstrate just how sick and perverted this administration is.

Whenever religion and politics are mixed, the result is detrimental to both.

This one really skewers the Religious Right and their attitudes towards women. My only criticism is that some points that the "Dr." makes are a little to extreme to be believed. The key to great satire, as I understand it, is to walk right up to the edge of incredulity without going over it. Some of the positions taken in this book are pure lunacy.

1.0 out of 5 stars A pinnacle of credibility and integrity., May 14, 2005

This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
This book is an absolute joke. According to Hager's ex-wife, he is a chronic rapist who tormented her by forcing sodomy on her in her sleep for decades before she finally got the courage to leave him. As outlandish as that sounds, I'm not making this up! Furthermore, when she asked him not to please refrain from putting it THERE, he replied that he couldn't tell the difference between her **beep-beep** and her **boop-boop**. Can a man who claims ignorance of his own wife's anatomy possibly make any credible contribution to the understanding of women's health? Hager is the posterchild for the argument that the more sanctimonious, patriarchal, and moralistic a fundamentalist is, the more disturbing his private sexual shame is likely to be. <Sigh.> I'm prayin' for you, Dave.

1.0 out of 5 stars Prayers for PMS? Beatitudes for bulimia?, February 21, 2003
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
He encourages women to turn to prayer and scripture to help heal ailments such as premenstrual syndrome, postpartum depression and eating disorders.

Don't waste your money or your time. Maybe faith can heal, and prayer can cure. However, I wouldn't go to a Doctor for spiritual counseling...why is this Priest-[come]-Physician practicing medicine?

1.0 out of 5 stars response to 'Reality Check', November 9, 2004
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
Dr Hagar is not "out in June 2004." In fact, he has been appointed for another year (starting in June 2004). Time magazine reported that "In his private practice, two sources familiar with it say, Hager refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women." Do not buy this guy's book. If you must, borrow it from a church.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous and Inappropriate, July 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
President Bush has announced his plan to select Dr. W. David Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee, and is likely to fill the other eleven positions with similar Christian Rightwingers. Congress cannot stop this. I guess we better all start praying, since the government will be making decisions about the availablity of drugs on religious grounds, rather than scientific information.

1.0 out of 5 stars reality check, March 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
Here're the facts: The man is a member of the FDA committee, not the chair. He was appointed in December 2002 (two years ago, folks) and he'll be out in June of this year (2004). The chair of the committee is a woman scientist from Stanford. Some of the circulating Hager rumour is exaggerated. However, at least three standing members in the FDA roster do publicly blend their christianity with their Science. I'm simply glad there are still committees of scientists involved in government. I tried three weeks ago to post this message with links to corroborate myself, but my post didn't make it up here. Since the rumour (see snopes) is up again, I thought I would try to rebut the previous reviewer anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jesus would be ashamed!, October 2, 2007
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
I would hate to think, "As Jesus Cared For Woman",the way Dr.W. Hager cared for his wifes, would be acceptable to Jesus...His first wife of 32 years divorced him, citing that he repeatedly raped her anally. His second wife has just filed for divorce citing that Hager has been drugging and raping her as well. Hager is certified OB/GYN and leading conservative of Christian voice on woman's health and sexuality...Georag W. Bush appointed him to advisory committee for reproductive health and drug for th FDA. Just another reason for us to feel fearful.

By
Babushka (Wilmington, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now (Hardcover)
Dr. Hager has written a very compassionate and insightful book for women that reassures them of their intrinsic value and special place in the Lord's heart. He addresses real life issues that most modern women face and offers scriptural solutions as well as hard-won personal and professional advice. Dr. Hager is an OB/GYN with the medical and spiritual credentials to qualify him to minister much grace into the lives of hurting women.
