2.0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate follow-up to a great album, June 15, 2009
By Conor Allen (Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
I have to agree with what another reviewer has said: This album is not a worth follow-up to From These Wounds. Everything is in place. The production is quality, the vocals sound the same. But From These Wounds was tuneful; the songs had a hook. These songs just drone on, and there isn't a good tune. It's very forgettable. Hard to describe, but if you compare From These Wounds to this album, it's clear almost immediately that something's been lost. It's quite a letdown. Buy From These Wounds instead of this album, and hope they get back on track for the next one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is This The Same Band?, April 2, 2009
By Joseph Fletcher (North Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really hate it when this happens: one of the songwriters quits the band, and the rest of the guys continue on, thinking that as long as they play the same style they'll be all right. This album is proof that the real genius behind From These Wounds was Kjetil Ottersen, who left the band after that album.

While As The Light continues in the same vein as Funeral's previous masterpiece, the songwriting just isn't there. The chant/sung vocals are still there, along with the crushing guitar sound, the pristine production and dirge-like pace. The songs, however, are completely forgettable, and the melodies are awful. While Kjetil could make the listener's hair stand on end using only a couple notes, the melodies on this album are just grating, particularly in the case of In the Fathoms of Wit and Reason, which features Candlemass's lead singer.

All in all, I wish I had never heard this CD. Honestly, my opinion of this band has gone way down. With as good as From This Wounds was, Funeral never should have release something as mediocre as this. Shameful.
