Book Description

April 10, 2001

Anyone who has worked for someone else knows the endless routine, the twisted psychology, and the near-impossible obstacle course that comprise the daily life of the assistant. And anyone who's gotten married knows that planning a wedding can be similarly daunting. For ten long years, Oscar Campbell has worked as the personal assistant to the legendary Dawn of Dawn Books, as famous for her temper tantrums as for the success of her powerful New York City publishing house. Yet none of Oscar's experiences has prepared him for his greatest challenge: planning his boss's wedding.

In the tradition of classic screwball comedies and with flair for modern-day irony, As Long As She Needs Me is a masterful satire of the publishing industry, a romp through the wedding industry, and a sparkling fable of love and luck in Manhattan. Juggling monster agents and mega-authors, passed hors-d'oeuvre options and centerpiece styles, Oscar labors to pull together the event without falling apart in the process. Help arrives in the form of popular wedding columnist Lauren LaRose, with whom Oscar strikes a bargain: his editorial expertise for her nuptial advice. As the two work together to manufacture the romances of others, they stumble into one themselves -- a development that soon has Oscar secretly planning an event of his own.

In As Long As She Needs Me, Nicholas Weinstock has crafted an irresistible novel of the highest comedy. A savvy tour through the high-rolling world of the book business and the grueling maze of single life in Manhattan, the novel is a riot of unforgettable characters and -- against all odds -- a love story for our time.

Hilarious and wise, literate and charming, As Long As She Needs Me is an utterly delightful achievement.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Oscar, the hero of Weinstock's funny and breezy novel, is a beleaguered personal assistant at a Manhattan publishing house called Dawn Books. He reports directly to Dawn herself--a raving egomaniac, the kind of over-the-top diva usually played by Glenn Close in the movies. For a decade, Oscar has tended to all of Dawn's needs, including editing her titles, but when it comes time to plan Dawn's secret wedding to a high-profile agent, Oscar feels lost. Fortunately, he soon crosses paths with Lauren LaRose, an attractive, single writer whose well-known wedding column appears in a national bride's magazine. Oscar appeals to Lauren for her expert guidance and also to be able to spend time with her. Lauren, whose view of romance has become cynical after attending so many weddings, is grateful for Oscar's help in pepping up her columns, but she assumes that Oscar is planning his own wedding and so keeps him at arm's length. The outcome is as predictable as a wedding march, but Weinstock's clever prose and fast pace will charm the romantic spirit of many readers. James Klise

"Weinstock's clever tale provides, like a glass of good champagne, all the heady, fizzy pleasures of a 1930's screwball comedy." -- Francine Prose, US Magazine

1.0 out of 5 stars A Screenplay Waiting to Happen, May 29, 2001

This review is from: As Long As She Needs Me (Paperback)
Nicholas's Weinstock's "As Long As She Needs Me" is a screenplay disguised as a novel, with a premise so idiodic only Hollywood would approve. It purports to be an inside look at the world of publishing, but it offers few insights other than the nuts-and-bolts details that anyone who works in the industry will be familiar with. ( A sales conference is where publishers' launch a book? Wow!) The characters are vaguely drawn, uninspiring, and the "love story" at its center is pure nonsense. There is a great novel to be written about this subject, but this doesn't even come close.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all..., April 11, 2001

I picked this book up looking for a light read, and certainly found it. Sometimes this was a good thing, sometimes not.

The writing style primarily consists of witticisms and "clever" observations about people and life in general. Some of these are pretty amusing. However, I couldn't help but feel at times that the writer was so focused on being clever that he forgot to develop many of his characters. I never *really* cared about Oscar's demanding boss, much less his somewhat pathetic love interest. (She's written a wedding column for years..but, surprise, surprise, had no romance in her own life.)

That said, I did finish the book. The plot is amusing and Oscar is a sympathetic character. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for something on the lighter side, or anyone interested in humor having to do with weddings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sparks of funny that never ignited, July 19, 2001

This book had a few funny parts, but just never got off the ground. The main character was not multi-dimensional. It was not the fun read I had expected. I had to force myself to finish it.
