A Screenplay Waiting to Happen,
By Alex Nichols (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: As Long As She Needs Me (Paperback)
Nicholas's Weinstock's "As Long As She Needs Me" is a screenplay disguised as a novel, with a premise so idiodic only Hollywood would approve. It purports to be an inside look at the world of publishing, but it offers few insights other than the nuts-and-bolts details that anyone who works in the industry will be familiar with. ( A sales conference is where publishers' launch a book? Wow!) The characters are vaguely drawn, uninspiring, and the "love story" at its center is pure nonsense. There is a great novel to be written about this subject, but this doesn't even come close.

Not bad, not bad at all...,

This review is from: As Long As She Needs Me (Paperback)
I picked this book up looking for a light read, and certainly found it. Sometimes this was a good thing, sometimes not.The writing style primarily consists of witticisms and "clever" observations about people and life in general. Some of these are pretty amusing. However, I couldn't help but feel at times that the writer was so focused on being clever that he forgot to develop many of his characters. I never *really* cared about Oscar's demanding boss, much less his somewhat pathetic love interest. (She's written a wedding column for years..but, surprise, surprise, had no romance in her own life.) That said, I did finish the book. The plot is amusing and Oscar is a sympathetic character. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for something on the lighter side, or anyone interested in humor having to do with weddings.

Sparks of funny that never ignited,

This book had a few funny parts, but just never got off the ground. The main character was not multi-dimensional. It was not the fun read I had expected. I had to force myself to finish it.

As long as he writes ...,

I will read. A wonderful, light read on weddings and working for someone else. From the devastatingly cruel depictions of his college roommates, to the wonderfully sarcastic commentary on the publishing world, this is an engaging book with a surprising ending ...

Hugely entertaining, intelligent and witty,
By Rosemary Bailey Brown (United States, Serbia, Croatia) - See all my reviews

Vastly enjoyed myself reading this book. It's romantic, silly, sweet and at its heart very true to life.Yes the plot is unlikely - but the author brings in so many realistic touches to single 30-something life that you are willing to suspend disbelief and just have a heck of a good time. Darned good fun. I highly recommend it.

I was having so much fun with this book I sat at the hair salon for twenty minutes after I was done just so I could finish it. Perfect beach read. Perfect brain candy. A delight of a book. Breezy - inside track on the book biz and somehow romantic without being soapy.

This book is a delight to read. Weinstock has crafted an engaging story, populated with vivid characters, and punctuated with clever insights into human nature reminiscent of TV's Sex and the City at its best. This book is a must read for those of us who have planned a wedding, been as assistant, or worked in publishing. Although I have never set foot in a publishing house, I would love to know who his characters are based on.

Weinstock's Voice A Major Draw,
By A Customer
This review is from: As Long As She Needs Me (Paperback)
Having never been married (or an assistant for that matter), I wondered whether the content of this book would appeal to me. I was pleased to find that Weinstock is capable of the sort of prose that might make any subject interesting. Unlike many contempory authors, Weinstock is quite adapt at writing realistic dialogue and he produces characters that, while treading the fine line of caricature in certain cases (i.e. the tyranical Dawn of Dawn's books and the lascivious Marion), actually seem like people you know. I also found the use of the publishing world to be an interesting backdrop to the sincere romance between Oscar and Lauren and the nebulous romance of the publishing giant (Dawn) and the super agent (Gordon). I wholeheartedly recommend this book as Weinstock's characters and their lives are presented with an easy style, a cunning wit, and considerable insight into human nature.

This is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time! Great insight into publishing and hilarious "theme weddings". Truly touches something within all of us who have looked for love at one time or another. Did not want it to end; hope to see more from Nicholas Weinstock!

As Long As She Needs Me -- Humorous,

This review is from: As Long As She Needs Me (Paperback)
As Long As She Needs Me was a quick read, but very entertaining. I could not put the book down until I finished it. The book is even more humorous if you work for someone else,in a support situation. Weinstock's quirks were easily interpreted by me and I have heard them all in the workplace.Love and hate mixed well in this novel, providing humor throughout. The game playing and mind games went along well with the rest of the story. It comes highly recommended from me. |
