5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for touists
When travelling I like to have a good history of the places we are visiting. My wife and recently spent 2 weeks driving around Newfoundland and I found "As near to heaven as by sea" the perfect historic supplement. 3.0 out of 5 stars For history buffs
As an ex-pat Canadian living in England, I got this book for Christmas as I was looking for some short stories about Canada to tide me over until my eventual return home to the Homeland. While packed with a lot of history and well detailed facts, I must admit that this book is more for history buffs than those looking for a less history written and more story driven read.

This review is from: As Near to Heaven by Sea : A History of Newfoundland and Labrador (Paperback)

My wife and recently spent 2 weeks driving around Newfoundland and I found "As near to heaven as by sea" the perfect historic supplement. The book is well written and very lively with just the right amount of detail. It is written by someone who has a real love of the Province and gives you an understanding of what makes Newfoundland the place it is today. Also if you go to Newfoundland be sure to check out the EAST COAST TRAIL it is not well publized and not well traveled but it is great for 2-5 days hiking.
